How long had it been since they were here? Reika's feet pressed softly against the dirt road that led into the small town that had once been her childhood home. Her footsteps were deliberate and light, scarcely making any sound, as she continued down the path. Her breathing faltered every once and awhile, now that they were getting closer... though when she became cognizant of it, she would do her beast to steady the airflow. While her eyes remained focused on the pathway in front of her, she was strategically aware of her surroundings. She had made notice of the possible directions that someone may appear, and was mindful of any movement in the peripherals, though there hadn't been much more than an occasional fluttering piece of garbage, that had caught her attention this far to the outskirts of the town. She pressed forward.
Just ahead were the first clusters of structures. They dotted either side of the road, without reason or care. There was noticeable signs of wear on the buildings, even without being close to them. Reika stopped. Fingernails jabbed into her palm as her hands clenched to fists near her hips. Teeth sunk into her bottom lip. "What do you think we'll find?" she questioned airily. She wasn't necessarily expecting a response, but felt compelled to breathe life into the question anyways. There were so many possibilities running through her mind at that exact moment. Would they be met with the same carnage they had stepped away from? Had the corpses and blood been washed away? Picked clean by wild animals? Had miscreants occupied the homes that had been since left vacant?
Her body was a war-zone. Curiosity met fear on the battlefront. A stand still. She couldn't decide if she should press forward or fall back, and so she stood, silently. Amethyst orbs cast their way to her companion, a silent plea to end her indecision.
