in the distance Unfamiliar cadence Smell the scent of your youth Fragrant in the breeze
|The breeze had the wet taste of winter. It was nothing like the salty taste of the air that Raque had. Where, simply opening your mouth made one feel as if they were thirsty. It was warmer there too, and more familiar to Rou. This place, lingering in the noble region was uncomfortable. Like there was a tight leash around her neck. Be good, it seemed to say. Don’t forget what putting on that cape meant. Just like every other squad, the Blue Rose had examples that were meant to be followed. |
Rou was still learning them all. Troublesome as they were. Like, the one where she couldn’t simply sit somewhere and doze. Be composed- the words rung in her ears.
If it were up to her, she wouldn’t have stepped foot in these streets. Or have gone outside. But with the appearance of the new dungeon in the countryside that the magic king created, every knight was shuffled around to do their turns. Rou was no exception. It left her in the city waiting though. Even when it was this close to the holy night, the girl begrudgingly thought. She’d rather be home, wrapped up in covers and relaxing. A much better fate than whatever this limbo was. Hopefully they’d be done with this soon.
But seeing as she was there, Rou decided that perhaps it was a good chance to find something else to bring back as a present. What would they like though? How vexing. The reflection in the glass window of the shop reflected her image back. How many stores has it been thus far? Too many to count. But with each store had an equally long break followed. There simply wasn’t enough time in the day to accommodate Rou’s slow pace and indecisiveness.
One of the girl’s hands rose to scratch at the side of her head. Most of it was very… “Boring.” A couple with linked arms looked startled at her sudden words and began to hurry away. Just one more then. It seemed like the one of her was a bookstore of sorts. Fancy, rare noble books were displayed in the window. Christmas stories to fit the season with colorful covers and decorative designs. There had to be something in there, right?
Did any of them like to read though? Rou didn’t know. Her face scrunched up as she walked inside. Maybe there would be something here to send back to the orphanage then. The younger children had complained about how they’d already heard all the stories the Priest had there. Maybe something newer was here on these shelves?
Rou stopped and brushed her hand across a few of the books spines as she read the titles. These weren’t kids’ books. Most of the titles were beyond even her. “How do you even pronounce that…?” Uzardrugs? Usharglug? Rou pulled it off the shelf and turned it over to the front.
