Magic Knights Mantle, Black Lioness Blade, Lion Heart
The girl took a deep breath, staring at herself in her mirror. She wasn’t the same person that she was two years ago. This time, things were different… way different. The girl clenched her fists, still trying to build up the confidence to even head over to his office. Back when Silas sparred against the captain for the position, he seemed a lot more calm than she was now. Then again, when he had as much strength as he did, she would find it kind of hard to believe that he wasn’t confident. However, if she spent thinking about things all day then she’d never get to take her test. “Careful now princess. Don’t wet yourself.” Astrid spoke up within her mind. Emily squinted and shook her head. “Whatever.” she said, sighing before taking another deep breath. “I’m not scared. I’m just… worried, or no, just anxious I guess.” she said. “There’s so many people that helped me get here, and I feel like if I fail then I’ll be letting them down.” she explained. “Pshhh, that’s a load of crap. That’s why you should just be so strong that you don’t need anyone else’s help.” Astrid scoffed. Emily smirked, “If that was your attempt at trying to make me feel better about this, then, thank you.” she said. “Oh now you’re full of it! Like I would care about your dumbass feelings!” Astrid shouted. “Awwww, see, you do care.” she said, mocking the woman. “Again.. I DO NOT!” she shouted. “Just try and remember not to die.” she added. [break][break] “You don’t need to remind me of that. I already told you the Captain and I aren’t fighting to the death. It’s just a test Astrid.” she said as she left her room. The redhead had everything she needed. All that was left was to make it to Ardere’s office and let him know that she was ready to start. Even while she was making her way down the hall she felt stiff. She felt like she had to keep forcing herself to breathe or she’d just stop doing it all of a sudden. It was a bit of a struggle, but she finally made her way to the office. The door was cracked, which was usually the case. The Vermillion didn’t remember the last time the Captain voluntarily locked himself in his office. Despite the door being open, she still knocked a few times before slowly pushing it open. Sure enough, as the room came into view there would be a fairly large stack of paperwork. The girl cringed. It definitely wasn’t something she was looking forward to. Then again, she was almost positive that the Captain wasn’t focused on the work. “Captain? Are you busy?” she asked. “I-If you are I can come back later for my test!” she quickly added.
I must finish it.[break] For Lysander...[break][break]
[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Standing on the roof of the Crimson Lion Base, Ardere took a deep breath. His eyes were fixated on the Capital City that was not far away from the base. In the other direction; Balgon Prison. These were two territories he was tasked with protecting. Yes there were the Golden Dawn and the Silver Eagles, but the Crimson Lion Captain felt some off responsibility to bear the weight of everything on his shoulders. It was days like these he wondered if he inherited that from his father, or from Lysander. Perhaps in some ways it was a bit of both. He loved this Kingdom, even with its flaws. Not many people could say that about their home, but here he had found friends. He understood why his father came to this country and built their business alongside his grandfather. This was the one place they could really be free. And as the Captain, it was his job to protect this place. The only way he could do that was to gain strength. To him, strength wasn't just in oneself but in those he chose to surround himself with. And today, was a test of one of those people.
Leaping from the roof of the base, he twirled around a tree before landing down onto the ground. Shortly before he left his office, he had left a note on his desk for Emily to find. It wouldn't be hard to find, and he would leave the door cracked as usual. Once she found this letter, it would read like so;
[break][break] 'Dear Emily.
Big day today, right?
Just meet me about a mile into the woods outside the base. The Lion training ground isn't exactly cut out for what I have in mind today. Bring whatever gear you'd like, but most of all bring your guts. Being a Crimson Lion takes a lot of guts, but you already knew that.
Anyways, I'll be in the woods. You'll find the clearing pretty easily.
See you then! -Ardere'
After making it into the clearing, Ardere had removed his Crimson Lion cape and tossed it across the branch of a tree. Now he was just wearing his Archangel's Tunic, but without the jacket he normally had. Just the tunic today, and his wits. That's all he needed for now. He had confidence that Emily would perform well. After all, she had been in the Lions some time. The two had worked together when Ard was a Vice Captain, and he considered that of importance. She knew him before he was the man he was today. She had actually been a second choice for Vice after Silas. But perhaps this was fate. Silas could forge his own path in the Peacocks, without Ardere hindering him. And now Emily could make a name for herself as his Vice, or at least he hoped. It had been a while since he did an exam. It was exciting in many ways, but in others he still felt nervous. How did Lysander and his father do this for years? They both were Captains for some time. Hmph. Guess I gotta figure it out on my own, eh old man? He looked up to the sky for a moment and smiled. He had a future to look forward to, and good people beside him.

Part of her almost wanted for there to be a legitimate reason why they had to reschedule, but she didn’t really want that, right? “Nope, no way. I have to keep my promise to Forrest.” she thought to herself, toughening her resolve just enough to get her through the day. However, when she didn’t receive any kind of response, the girl would soon realize that she was freaking out over nothing. She slowly pushed the door open a little more and peeked her head in. “Captain?” she called out, looking around the office. Given that there wasn’t an answer, the girl decided to head into the room. “Come to think of it, I’ve never really been in here that many times, huh?” she asked herself. “Did he forget that my test was supposed to be today?” she asked, sounding a bit offended at first. She then shook her head, “The Captain can be… well… forgetful, but he usually keeps the important stuff in the forefront of his mind, so maybe he just had a good reason.” she said. The girl approached his desk, spotting something that looked to be some kind of note. At first, she refrained from reading it, thinking that she was just being nosy, but did it have her name on it? As the girl took another glance, and a closer one this time, she confirmed that it did. She grabbed the piece of paper off of the Captain’s desk and began to read the note. [break][break] “He wants me to go out into the woods with all of my gear… and my guts?” the girl questioned. Apparently, the training area wasn’t going to be enough for what he had planned, which made the girl worry just a bit. Sometimes the Captain had ideas that were a bit… well… drastic. Then again, he’d never purposefully put any of his fellow lions in danger, and she knew that. However, this was also a test, and she knew that the Captain didn’t play around with things like that. She figured that he would rather have them ready for real situations rather than lose a squad-mate because they weren’t prepared for the worse. Either way, she could feel that feeling of anxiety beginning to build again. At the same time, she was relieved. For a second she thought that they would have to reschedule, but that wasn’t the case. Today, she was going to do her best to ace whatever kind of test the Captain had up his sleeve. “Well… how much longer do you plan on standing around?” Astrid asked. [break][break] Without an answer, the redhead headed out of the base. She already had everything that she needed. “A mile outside of the base… at a clearing in the middle of the woods.” she repeated to herself. The Captain’s note said that the clearing would be rather easy to find. After mentally preparing herself during her walk out into the woods, she felt that she was even more ready than before. Regardless, there was no backing out at this point. It wasn’t long before she could see the clearing… and the Captain. The Vermillion stepped out into the open with a mix of determination and anxiety on her face. “Alright Captain, I’m here.” she said.
I must finish it.[break] For Lysander...[break][break]
[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Emily. Ardere smiled. It seemed like fate for Vermillion blood to be ingrained in the Crimson Lion leadership. In fact Lysander and Ardere were the first two Lion Captains in quite some time that weren't Vermillion. At least that he knew of. But this was for good reason; the Vermillions were a good family. They were strong willed and raised properly. They were a bit less stingy than the Silvas, and the fact that so many of them had heat related magics helped. Regardless, Emily was different than Silas. Her attitude was different, and her style wasn't quite as brash as his was. But she had the one thing all good lion's had; spirit. Indomitable spirit at that. Unfortunately there was only one way to test this spirit--and that was the same thing Lysander did to Ard. This was the test.
You're on time, as usual. That was another thing about her--Emily was far more structured and disciplined than most Lions these days. Under Ardere's leadership it was a bit less formally militant, and more like a Knighthood of soldiers. They followed him out of loyalty and what he liked to think was admiration; not duty. This was the thing he hoped to inspire, if he could. The feeling he had for Lysander. But Emily, she had a good sense of duty as well as a strong bond with her Captain. They had been friends for a few years now, but as his former mentor always said; "You don't truly know someone until you fight them." As such, it was time to begin. I'll be quite frank. I'm going to attack you. How you defend and counter attack is all up to you, but this is as much a test of will as it is of overall battle prowess. More than most of the other squads, our leadership is based heavily in strength. A blazing aura began to shimmer across the Captain's body as he powered up. His magic signature could be felt all the way back at the base. I'm sure you know I didn't get to where I'm standing right now just cause people liked me. I spent four years on a bloody battlefield and many more in the training grounds. Being stronger than Lysander was not an easy task, and you being stronger than me probably seems impossible right now. But for now, you don't have to beat me. You just have to withstand me. That's the first step.
Holding his hand out to the side, his pitch black and gold grimoire burst into flames. Four fiery swords appeared behind him, slowly spiraling like a fan. Closing his fist, the blades began to spin wildly to the point that there was no space between them. They had formed a blazing disc of fury. True Arsenal of Flames. This was Ardere's signature spell, meaning it was far more powerful than the average spell. The power boost he got from it was beyond any other spell he had, even at Senior. This was due to using this spell in almost every fight and every training session. There was a special place in his heart for this spell. Let's see what you can do, Emily! Commanding the wheel of blades to spin around him, it slashed up the ground into pieces. He then sent it flying at the woman standing across from his like a blazing wheel of death. She would only have a split second to react. Hopefully she had planned her move.
Name of Spell: Arsenal of Flame Elemental Type: Fire Spell Rank/Type: Senior, Attack Creation Spell Range/Speed: 40m AoE or 80m, 40 m/s Mana Cost: 24 (12) Stats: +19 Power Applicable Perks: Battle Knight, Mana Conservationist, Signature Attack Description: Ardere summons a sword comprised entirely of flames. He can freely control this sword within a fifty meter radius of himself for an entire post, or longer if he chooses to sustain the spell. This means he can use it to slash, stab, or even hold it like a normal sword within the limits of his control. The sword(s) is 2 meters in length. If an opponent is hit by this blade of flame, it can melt through flesh and limbs dealing some serious damage. The sword is utilized offensively and are at the control of their creator. They can be fired off like a spear at a speed of 40 m/s and up to 80 meters away. But if this is done, then the sword dissipates after making contact with a target, and can no longer be used.
Note: Extra swords can be created/utilized at a time for every 25 points in control Ard has.
Magic Knights Mantle, Black Lioness Blade, Lion Heart
She was acknowledged as soon as she arrived. It was only natural that way. It wasn’t any kind of sneak attack, ambush, or trick. Just as the Captain instructed, he was waiting for her in the clearing. Then again, Ardere was never one for beating around the bush. He was always straight to the point, and the redhead appreciated that about him. It was one of the things that she admired the most about the Captain as she watched him. He not only had that mindset, but the power to overcome the obstacles that stood before him. He had to, because if he didn’t, no one else would. It seemed like it was always that way. The war with the Diamond Kingdom was the best reference she had in her mind. When it came time to step up, Ardere was always the one to do it. He never ran away, and he, for the most part, seemed to be unbeatable. It was another reason why the girl respected, and feared the Captain. Now, here she was standing before him of all people with the intent to fight. If she wasn’t practically frozen to the ground by her own nerves then she was sure she would’ve bolted off somewhere by now. However, it was probably just her body’s way of not letting her mind get the best of her. Either way, deep down, the girl knew that she couldn’t run from this. It was what she had been working towards for the past two years, hell, even before then. [break][break] His comment about her punctuality seemed to go right over her head. She was too focused, or scared, to respond at the moment. The lioness kept her feet planted and her fists clenched. Even when the Captain began to speak again, she still seemed to remain as frozen as ever. Though she did listen to exactly what he was saying. Just as she thought, this was going to be a battle. The girl didn’t know how successful she’d be when it came to “defending”, but counterattack seemed to be a perfect substitute word for the former. When it came to the growth that she had since her battle with Silas, she was positive that she had plenty of willpower, but the battle prowess portion of the test was what scared her the most. Immediately after he finished speaking, the girl watched a blazing aura come to life around the Captain’s body. His magical power began to explode out in all directions. The magic in the area was so dense that the girl could practically feel it. Her eyes widened as she witnessed his power, the power of a Captain, and one of the strongest mages in the kingdom. Ardere continued speaking about how he got to where he currently was, making it clear that he wasn’t the one to take shortcuts. He also made it clear that although being stronger than him presently felt like an impossible task, all she had to do for now was withstand him. Even then, the redhead knew that it would be much easier said than done. [break][break] The lioness watched as the Captain’s grimoire actively burst into flames. “He’s coming!” she thought to herself, becoming even more distressed than before. The wind in the area began to pick up as Ardere’s already powerful magical presence began to grow even greater. Four blades made of flame appeared behind the Captain. Of course, she had seen the spell enough times. However, it didn’t make her any less afraid of its power. In fact, it had the opposite effect. After appearing, the blades began to spiral. As the Captain closed his fist, however, the blades began to close in on one another until they became a wheel of some sort. As the attack was being prepared, the girl finally managed to get a hold of her expression. Her wide-eyed astonishment changed into a snarl, displaying a mixture of fear, frustration, anxiety, and determination. She knew exactly what she was walking into when she decided to come out to this forest, and yet, it didn’t make her any less afraid. “Well?! If you stand there you’re going to be flattened!” Astrid practically shouted through the girl’s mind. “Are you going to run away… or fight?” she asked. [break][break] Ironically enough, the rising tension in the environment is what allowed the girl to finally get a hold of herself. With astrid in her mind, and her body being prepared to move in response to the battle, rather than in response to her thoughts, she could finally take a stand. The Captain gave a few final words before sending the wheel of blades towards her. Emily shot both hands straight out in front of her. “I’ll fight!” she thought, answering the woman’s earlier question, which was really more like an ultimatum. A mass of black smoke quickly appeared, forming itself into a griffin. The beast dropped its wings in front of its face, letting the wheel of blades grind against them. “Smoke Golem Magic: Black Griffin!” Emily shouted. The beast threw both of its wings outwards, repelling the Captain’s attack for the time being. Although the nerves remained present, rather than hindering her movement, they were the sole reason why she was even able to move. Even after the attack, the girl had eyes of determination locked on the Captain. She had managed to at least stop him once. Now, it was time to fight back. [break][break] “Be careful what you wish for Captain. I’m going to do more than just withstand you, I’ll give this everything I’ve got!” she shouted. The redhead mounted her golem beast and began to head right for Ardere. “Smoke Illusion Magic: Black Lioness’ Dwelling!” she shouted. If it was successful in catching the Captain, he would see four black lioness beasts emerge. The animals would do nothing more than chase him down for the sake of intimidation, but as a side effect, the Captain’s natural endurance would be weakened. However, the girl wasn’t finished with her offensive quite yet. “Smoke Curse Magic: Black Lioness’ Disarming!” she shouted. On command, black waves of smoke began to pulse off of her. Lastly, while she was still riding, her griffin beast launched itself at the Captain once she was close enough, trying to swipe its claw across his body.
Combat Summary: Emily used her golem spell to defend against the Captain's attack before going offensive. The beasts are capable of touching the target but any attempt made to touch the lioness will result in nothing considering they are just illusions. For every 50 control Emily can cause another black lioness to appear. While under the effects of the illusion, the target takes extra junior damage due to their endurance being debuffed. [attr="class","ardereescroll"]Ardere's spell was deflected by a golem, prompting him to nod and a smirk to cross his lips. So it begins. He cracked his neck, emitting several popping sounds. I hope you're ready. Raising the blades up into the air, he kept them hovering above Emily, spiraling around in a circle. He attempted to do this without her noticing, because once she shot the first debuff at him, he would jump back quite a few meters. As he leaped backwards, his defensive spell activated. Crimson King! And as this spell activated, his entire body was coated in a dense flame. This flame formed a sort of armor across his entire body, blazing around him and even igniting his hair. It was almost intimidating. His eyes were glowing a bright red, and as he leaped through the smoke--the debuff was cleansed instantly. Due to his White Knight ability, he could utilize his Defensive spell to cleanse hexes. Unfortunately another one had been thrown at him that he would have to deal with, so as he jumped he also exhaled a massive amount of flames. The multiple smoke spells coming at him made it hard for him to sense anything, even with his Ki--so he had to act quick and just fire blindly. Dragon's Breath! Activating this spell allowed him to quite literally breathe out flames like a dragon. Emily in particular would find this amusing, as she was present when Ard had taken care of a young dragon.
The two mages had a history, and they had been friends for quite some time now. Back in the Volcano Magic Zone, the two had spent weeks helping the researchers with that baby dragon. She had been a strong Lion always, but now this was the true test. This wasn't any ordinary mission or dungeon, this was a match against her Squad Captain. Ardere was perhaps the most combat experienced mage in the entire Order. Sure mages like Yuurei and Silas could fight on par with him easily, but there was an experience and resilience that the Roaring Inferno had built up during 4 years on the front lines of the Diamond War. His intensity and focus were impressive. While he himself would never say this, it was true. In his own mind, he had to keep getting stronger. Even as strong as he was, he had found his limits in the final floor of the Shining Stone Palace. He had burnt himself out so much that he fainted. It was frustrating, but he had the Lions to help him. So in turn, he would help them. Together they would grow. That was the difference between him and the other Captains. His squad would be lifted up alongside him, even if he had to drag them up by their necks. He loved them, and they were his family. This meant that he considered Emily family too, and he trusted her enough to ask her to be his Vice. It wasn't an easy decision, but this was what he had chosen.
As the Dragon's Breathe burst through the illusion spells like they were nothing, Ardere commanded the multiple blades spiraling in the air to fire down. They would fire off one by one at the golem until it was impaled by a flurry of blazing swords. He wanted to make sure he took care of it. Golems could be quite troublesome. The Dragon's Breathe spell was powerful enough to overwhelm everything, but unfortunately it had fought it's way through quite a bit of smoke and would be weakened a bit. Let's see what you've got! He called out, laughing wildly. He was starting to have fun now.

The pure fiery energy from this flame boosts its user's strength to Senior level, allowing them to dish out powerful blazing attacks. This means he can easily break bones by punching opponents who have no defense or armor. It is the ultimate defense for Ardere, inspired by Lysander's Ifrit Skin and Elizabeth's Reaper Mantle.[break]

This attack can be sustained if need be, allowing the user to level entire areas with flame. If an opponent is hit directly, the flames will burn right through the flesh. Most buildings hit by this attack will be leveled. Due to the elemental oddity Ardere possesses, this spell is also subject to utilizing knockback. (Knockback key is in Ard's grimoire)[break]

Magic Knights Mantle, Black Lioness Blade, Lion Heart
It was her go-to trick. Illusion magic was the girl’s specialty. It was something that she discovered she was good at from a very young age. She could cast them without having to try much, the simple ones at least. That’s why it really threw her for a loop when the Captain had a countermeasure for her best tactic. Then again, what should she have expected. He was the Captain of the Crimson Lions after all. Going into the battle with only a single strategy in mind was a dumb thing to do. She watched as he activated one of his strongest spells. Titled: Crimson King. The Captain’s body seemed to erupt into a mass of flames that created a sort of armor around his body. The flames were enough to blow away both of her spells. She gritted her teeth as she neared the Captain, in perfect range for a counterattack, which is of course, what he decided to do. Following his casting of Crimson King to get rid of her spells, Ardere jumped back throw the fading smoke and began breathing fire. The girl’s eyes widened as she saw this. “Since when did he learn to do that!?” she thought as the fire approached her. Though she didn’t have much time to react. The Vermillion was blown right off of her golem and sent flying through the forest. She freaked out, not having a way to stop herself. The knight’s leg ended up hitting a stray tree as she flew, causing her to flip in a few crazy directions before she crashed onto the ground, sliding to a stop. The girl was breathing heavily as she rolled onto her back and stared up at the sky. Additionally, the Captain made short work of her golem while she was gone. [break][break] “Thank goodness for Mana Skin… and so much for my strategy.” she mumbled to herself through her breathing. The girl heard the sound of laughter inside of her mind. It calmed down for a brief moment before the woman began to speak. “I thought you were supposed to be 'withstanding' that Captain of yours over there. Why are you on the ground all of a sudden, and so soon too?” Astrid asked, continuing her laughter. Emily let out a groan of frustration. “Let me… let me use your power Astrid.” the girl asked. It sucked. The last thing she wanted to do was ask that woman for anything, and yet, here she was. Her initial plan was a bust, and now what? She didn’t prepare much of a backup plan so she was trying to resort to something desperate. Something that would end up doing more harm to herself than good. However, she wanted to win. It wasn’t just that though, even if she didn’t win, she wanted to prove that she could handle it. The responsibilities that came along with being the Vice Captain were things that she dreamed of taking on ever since she became a Magic Knight. That meant that even if she had to feel that pain for just a little, she would do it if it meant that she could accomplish those goals. “Well?! What are you waiting for? All those times that you threatened to take control of me and you never did, but here I am literally asking you to do it, but you won’t?” she asked. [break][break] Just then, a black smoke began to emanate from the girl’s sword. It swirled around her body for a moment. As it did, the lioness could feel some of her injuries getting better. However, that was the extent of the experience. The Vermillion sat up, a rather frustrated and surprised expression on her face. “Finish your own damn fight. Like I said before, I’ll keep you alive, but that’s about it. I only helped you in the forest because Richard asked me to. Other than that, I’m not obligated to do anything you ask me to.” she sounded throughout the girl’s mind. [break][break] “Fine…” she said. As far as a backup plan went, the Vermillion didn’t really have one. However, she did have the ability to keep fighting. “Smoke Creation Magic: Black Manticore!” she shouted. A manticore made from black smoke appeared and allowed Emily to hop on. The Vermillion gave a command and the beast took off, back towards the clearing with the Captain. Wherever he decided to move, she would eventually make her way back to him. She drew her red-bladed sword, Lion Heart, and charged right at him. “Smoke Creation Magic: Cursed Lioness!” she shouted. Forming another one of her golems at her side, the beast moved towards the Captain with great speeds. The beast launched itself at the Captain, trying to cause some damage to his fiery armor. In addition, the manticore also attacked as well, if not for anything, at least to distract the Captain by giving him more things to focus on. Speaking of, Emily also swung her sword as the manticore passed by. Although she knew well before she even did so that her strike wouldn’t do a thing against the Captain’s armor, she attacked anyway.
Combat Summary: Emily's spells were all destroyed and she took the full force of the attack. She was knocked back through the woods, but due to hitting a tree, she only was knocked back about 50 something meters instead of the full 138 meters. She got back to her feet after having a small talk with the other voice within her. She then charged back in, assembling another two golems as she charged at the Captain, attacking with the both of them and a swing from her sword. [attr="class","ardereescroll"]Ardere smirked. Good. That's what I'm talking about. Taking a deep breath, he nodded. Emily had been easily knocked back by his attack, but the most important thing was that she got back up and kept coming. That was the most commendable effort he had seen thus far, and it made him proud. She was fighting against someone who both had raw power and experience on her, but she was aware of how important thing test was. She had no illusions it seemed, of hers or his own strength. Yet when he looked into her eyes, he saw determination. This was good. He hoped that he was right, and that she would not give up. This kind of strength was what he was looking for. He remembered his own fight against Lysander. It almost seemed effortless. Sure he managed to get one clear hit on the Captain, but that was after expending serious mana. But he didn't give up, and that was what made them Lions.
This was actually going to take some effort on his part to counter. While she did not have the same magical power as he did, she had strong golems and her strategy was to try and overwhelm him now. Not bad. He was going to move as fluidly as possible, and show her what his strength was. Lysander once told him the best way to get to know someone was to fight them, and even after years of friendship this was the first time Ardere and Emily would really get to know one another. There was an intimacy in fighting. Not romantic intimacy, but a powerful platonic one that was important for a Captain and Vice Captain. Not bad. Let's see how long you can keep it up! Emily's golems were fast. He instinctively kicked at the lioness which managed to crack his armor a bit, sending it at the manticore like a bullet. He had essentially used one of her golems to attack the other one, and this would likely knock her clean off of the manticore. He leaped to the side as the manticore charged at him, and he dished out a flurry of punches into the side of the golem. These punches were powerful enough to easily knock the made off her beast and the two would tumble across the ground if she managed to hold on to it. He leaped up at her flying body, and if she kept coming down with her sword, the fire mage would catch the blade. It cracked some of his armor, and he shook a bit as he held the bare blade.
Blazing eyes staring down at his future Vice, he deactivated his armor. The powerful flames cracked and fell off his body, revealing his brown hair and red eyes. Ardere would then go to land a bare kick into the side of her ribs to knock her across the dirt. His natural strength was powerful enough to deal damage, but it wouldn't gravely injure her if it landed--whereas his Crimson King would have. Strength comes from a lot of places. Sure, spells are powerful. But magic can be channeled through your body as well, fueled by your spirit and your heart. Those are the two most important sources of power. No matter how strong you are or how much mana you have, if you have no heart or spirit--you are doomed to fail. Dusting himself off, he looked over to the young Vermillion. So tell me, do you have heart? Do you have spirit? Why did I call you out into the woods here? Just to spar? No. Tell me--or better yet show me what it is.

Then he leaped at her, and if she kept coming with her sword he would catch it. Deactivate his armor, and then kick her in the side with his sheer natural strength.

Magic Knights Mantle, Black Lioness Blade, Lion Heart
Much to her surprise, Astrid had no intention of helping her. It was just going to be up to her this time around. No extra powers, and no extra assistance. As the girl charged towards Ardere on her golem, she held out her blade for an attack. The Captain was powerful, but she had to keep her promise. Even if he was more powerful than what she expected him to be, she knew that she had to keep up her attacks. “Beating him at his own game was never something I intended on doing. It’s not even something that I can do.” she thought to herself. However, the redhead had her own way of fighting. Even if her spells weren’t as powerful as Ardere’s or Silas’, and even if her magic couldn’t withstand attacks like Yuurei’s could, she was still able to fight. By her own means, she had managed to keep herself alive for this long, and that had to mean something at least. [break][break] As she approached the Captain riding atop her spell, the man began to make his attack. The cursed lioness beast that was fast approaching the Captain was thrown back by a powerful kick. The cursed beast was sent flying towards the manticore that Emily was riding on. The Vermillion’s eyes went wide at the sight of it. She didn’t have much of an option. The only way to avoid being completely thrown off was to create more momentum in the direction of the hurled lioness. Emily’s manticore made a pouncing motion towards the cursed lioness, slamming into the beast, turning its head to the side to help absorb the blow. Due to the jump, the beast was able to land without losing any ground. As soon as it landed, the golem already prepared another jump, and was this time pouncing at the Captain. Emily held out her blade, ready for the impact. However, the older lion seemed to have a plan of his own. As the man sidestepped the pounce, the girl hopped up, placing her feet on the manticore’s back before jumping again into the air. [break][break] She watched as the man unloaded a furious assault of punches into her golem, completely destroying it along with her cursed lioness. As the girl prepared to attack from above, the Captain wasted no time in matching her pace. She let out a hell as she swung her blade down towards him. Her sword made contact with his armor, causing it to crack once again. However, as he held her blade firmly in his grasp, he began to deactivate his spell. As the flames burned away, the Vermillion glared right back at the Captain as he stared her down. All of a sudden, a powerful kick was delivered to her side, causing her to let out a forced cough before she was tossed aside. The redhead hit the dirt and slid a bit before she came to a stop. The lioness clutched her right side with her left hand. Once again, she was thanking her mana skin. Despite the fact that the Captain deactivated his Crimson King skin before hitting her, she would’ve felt the pain a lot more had it not been for her mana skin. [break][break] She let out a bit of a growl through gritted teeth. She pushed up with her right hand, getting her feet beneath her. “Damn it. My spells were crushed again. It seems like no matter how much I throw at him, he just keeps burning through it.” she thought to herself, a look of frustration still on her face. That’s when the Captain began to speak. As she listened, she wasn’t too sure about what he was saying. Sure, she figured that it was true to some degree. After all, they were his beliefs, and he was powerful because of those beliefs. However, for the longest time the girl was so reliant on the power of her spells and how well she was able to control them. She never even considered things like her heart and her spirit. Was it true that things like those could truly benefit her? Speaking of benefits, the girl noticed that she was missing something. She looked at the right hand that was holding her up, where the object should’ve been. She then quickly look around the area. Her sword was still on the ground near the Captain. Without heart and spirit… she was doomed to fail? The girl looked up at the man, her eyes widening a bit at the statement. [break][break] “Astrid…” she mumbled, looking over at her sword. Did the woman still insist on not helping her? Regardless, this wasn’t about the woman. It was about whether or not the Vermillion could answer the Captain’s questions. Did she possess those things? Heart? Spirit? She supposed that she wouldn’t have been kept around for as long as she was if she didn’t possess them, and additionally, the girl was selected for this test by Ardere himself. It was just as Kinsei said, if he of all people didn’t believe in her, then he wouldn’t have selected her. However, that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t have to prove herself. Even if that meant she had to keep fighting until she was out of mana and covered with bruises and marks. Then again, for her to just say that, maybe it wasn’t that simple. [break][break] “Well Captain, I know that you wouldn’t want me as your Vice Captain if I didn’t have heart and spirit, but even so, that doesn’t mean that I have a clue why you called me out here today!” she shouted. “I tried so hard! I made a promise to Forrest that I’d become the Vice Captain, and eventually, the Captain! It was the only reason why I was able to keep fighting for myself, for you, and for the rest of the squad.” she explained. “But no matter how hard I tried, Silas was always stronger than I was. Before he became the Vice Captain, I fought him. It was the first time that I realized just how far away I was from achieving my goal.” she continued. “It was discouraging, but I still had a promise to keep. Though, no matter how hard I fought, he was always stronger!” she admitted. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she clenched her fists and pulled herself to her feet. “I’m only here because he got reassigned to another squad! If he was still here, he’d still be your Vice, not me! I don’t know why I’m here! That’s what I hoped that I would find in this fight!” she finished. [break][break] The girl paused for a moment, trying to gather a more intense field of mana. As she focused, black smoke began to gather around the area, only as high as their ankles. “Smoke Creation Magic: Accursed Cyclone!” she shouted. From the smoke that had accumulated below, there were three circular-shaped spots that began to rotate. Like cyclones they began rotating faster and faster as they climbed upwards towards the sky. Two of the cyclones had appeared, one on each side of Emily, before the third appeared, circling around herself, also shooting up towards the sky. The rising cyclones of smoke changed their trajectory and angled themselves back down towards the Captain. The cyclone trails traveled at the man, spinning violently as they approached.

I must finish it.[break] For Lysander...[break][break]
[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Ardere ground his teeth for a moment. It wasn't out of anger, or frustration--but nostalgia. He remembered what it was like, over a decade ago when he became a magic knight. It was shortly after the death of his father. He remembered that frustration, that pain. He had all of this conviction running through him, but that was all just fueled by the death of Ryoku. It had taken him years to find his own purpose, his own way that wasn't fueled by anger. Lysander was the person who showed him that, gave him a purpose beyond just getting strong for strength's sake. At one point in time, I would have said I just wanted to get strong to make sure I never made my mother cry like she did the day my father's body came home. I swore to myself I'd never make her lose anyone like that again, and it was a noble cause. But after all these years in the Crimson Lions, the reason I get up every morning is because of mages like you Emily. You're all so determined and headstrong, and brash as hell. I love it. Taking a breath, he nodded. But I realize that what made all of the previous Captains of the Lions so great, was their way of inspiring others. I don't know what your ultimate goal is, or if you even have one. What I do know is that I want to help you achieve it. You're right. Silas was who I picked as my Vice, and through that shitty war we fought--I lost him. But the difference between you and Silas, is something I should've seen a long time ago.
A blazing aura began to shimmer across the Captain as he wiped some ash and smoke from his face. He's got drive, and he's an ideal Lion just like we love. But I realized that I don't need an ideal Lion as my Vice. I need someone like you. I need someone to ground me, and to ground the rest of the squad. Someone who may not have all of the natural strength in the world, but they try so god damn hard. And that's what's important. If there's one thing you do Emily, it's try your fucking heart out. So let's find out what you're here for! Hit me with all you've got! As he spoke and the blazing aura spun around him, he was struck by a cyclone of smoke. Heh. Not bad.
The damage from the spell was enough to shatter his mana skin and damage the mage. His body was covered in cuts and bruises as he was flung across the ground. Tumbling through the dirt, he could not help but laugh. Perhaps he could have defended against the spell, but even he had to admit he would not have been able to dodge. Even so, he did not reveal this to her. Well. You did more than Silas could. You hit me pretty fucking hard, Emily. My Vice Captain. Wiping his face for a moment, he burst into laughter. It was a swarm of emotions. He had watched this young girl grow up essentially. Now, they had a squad to run. So as your reward, I'm going to show you a spell I haven't shown anyone yet. Inspired by Lysander. White flames began to swirl around Ardere as he struggled to stand. He had an unnatural well of health. A Grand attack head on would have knocked most people out, but he stood still not broken. You're here, because I need you Emily. My old friend. And you need me, so we can get stronger together. A suit of blazing white armor formed around the Captain's body, one with lion's heads as gauntlets. The power coming from the suit was so intense, that the ground around him began to heat up. This is, a Lion's Prowess. This one is for you, Lysander. He thought to himself as the armor expanded to form a lion that was 75 meters in height, a lion powerful enough to shatter buildings with a single swing. This was the strength of a Lion he had cultivated for so long.

There are several cracks that reveal bright flames running across his bodies as his eyes glow brightly. The aura extends across his entire body creating large lion heads at the end of his hands. The standard extension for this suit is a meter past his body, and as it amplifies his strength and offensive damage, it is utilized as a melee spell to deal massive amounts of damage to his opponents. One punch from this form would easily fell an entire building. If needed, Ard can extend these flames to form at 75 m maximum, a blazing lion suit similar to his Crimson Lion King spell. This provides a massive form to batter enemies with, but is also a bigger and easier target to hit.[break]

Magic Knights Mantle, Black Lioness Blade, Lion Heart
Emily listened as her Captain began to speak. He started off with his old purpose, which was in regards to the death of his father. He didn’t want to make his mother cry anymore. The girl had heard a little bit about the Captain’s father from Forrest, or at least about the fact that he had passed. She didn’t know the specifics, and she never really felt that she had the right to ask. However, he began to realize that the longer that he worked with them, it was the mages within the squad that gave him a new purpose. Mages like her, and anyone else who had the same headstrong attitude that he loved. It was practically a trademark quality of the squad, and it existed in all of its members. He then went on to mention how each one of the Captain’s had a way of inspiring others. Could she do that too, eventually? She figured that it was something that she needed to be able to do if she wanted to become Captain someday, but she had plenty of time until that day came. For now, she needed to focus on what the Captain’s next point was. It was in regards to her goals. He made it very clear that whatever it was that she wanted to do, he wanted to help her. However, did she know what she wanted to do? Sure, there was the goal to become Captain, but what about beyond that? Did her goals simply revolve around her position in the squad? Was that all she amounted to? She clenched her fists at the thought. She figured… she didn’t really have one to work towards. Just getting the chance to become Vice Captain was all she was focused on up until now. She didn’t have time to think of anything else. [break][break] She listened as he spoke about Silas, and how he was taken from the squad after the war. It was the decision that was made regardless of everyone’s opinion. He then mentioned that there was a difference between the two of them. She knew that already though, or at least she thought she did. Though she believed it was something simple like how much more powerful he was compared to her. However, the Captain believed differently. He described Silas’ personality, mentioning that he was an ideal Lion. Ardere let her know that he didn’t need someone like that as he Vice. What he needed was someone to ground him and the rest of the squad. She may not have been the most powerful, but she tried harder than anyone else in the squad. He made it very clear that that was what was important to him. Hearing it came as a bit of a relief to the girl. The tears that had been welling up in her eyes began to stream down the sides of her face as she took in what he said. She couldn’t believe the way that he described her. It was something that she never even thought she had in her, and yet, he did. She thought about what the man said in regards to a Captain being able to inspire others. This must’ve been that very quality. He wanted to find out what she was here for, right along with her. When he called for her to hit him, she didn’t hold back. “Yes sir!” she called out through her tears as the cyclone made contact with the Captain. [break][break] She watched as the lion was thrown back and sent tumbling across the ground. Though, even so, he was able to laugh. The girl flinched as he did so. She knew that he was tough, but even to take a spell like that head on and still be able to simply laugh was amazing. Then again, she knew that her magic wasn’t powerful enough to cause him any real damage. As he got to his feet, the girl’s body tensed up as she prepared herself for another attack. It wasn’t over just yet. The Captain announced that she did more than what Silas could. Shortly after, she heard the words that she had heard so many times before, but this time they were directed at her. In that moment, those two things were all that she needed to hear. “More than Silas… Vice Captain.” she thought to herself. She looked towards the ground and took a breath. The tears from before that seemed to have slowed down and dried off began to run again as she couldn’t help but let a smile creep onto her face. She had done it, and as she listened to the Captain’s laugh, she had the greatest feeling of joy that she had ever experienced. “I did it.” she told herself. However, even so, she still had a fight to finish. [break][break] Ardere announced that he would show her a brand new spell as a reward. At the mention of Lysander, Emily looked back over at the Captain to observe. White flames began to swirl around him. Immediately, the girl felt the rise in temperature. It felt like something close to what she experienced in the Grand Magic Zone. He spoke to her again, saying that they needed each other in order to get stronger. The young woman blinked a few times, nodding slowly at the statement. It was a wonderful thing to hear. “Yeah!” she said. It was all she could get out at the time. She was still very much anxious as to what kind of power his new spell held. She felt that if she lost focus for a moment she’d be swallowed up by the flames. The white heat culminated into a suit of armor that surrounded Ardere. The ground around him seemed to be warping from the heat. It was insane. The girl couldn’t believe what she was feeling. However, it didn’t stop there. The armor of white flames expanded to a massive size, becoming a giant lion. The girl looked up as the man’s mana expanded, still not quite sure if she could believe what she was seeing. How the hell was she supposed to beat that? [break][break] As discouraging as it was, she could still fight. She wasn’t hurt as badly as she could’ve been, and she had been standing for far longer than she expected to be, so there was no reason for her to give up. She took a few steps forward, reaching down to grab her sword. “I can’t give up yet.” she told herself, looking back up at the massive spell that was now looming over her. She tightened her grip on her blade and gritted her teeth. She had already managed to hit the Captain with her last spell. Her first step was to keep that spell sustained so that the black smoke that was swirling around his body would enter his skin and continue to deal damage. However, she needed to keep pushing him. “Smoke Sensory Magic: White Unveiling!” she shouted. Contrary to the name, the spell wasn’t just used for sensory purposes. The redhead releasing a small burst of white smoke in all directions. As it passed over the Captain’s spell the smoke would attempt to enter his body and deal him damage.

[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Alright, Emily. White flames began swirling around him intensely as the lion armor condensed down to his body to avoid further damage from any other spells. It seemed like Emily had planned to damage it regardless, activating another spell. Not bad. Heh. He smiled for a moment and took in a deep breath. The white flames from his Prowess intensified, as they were suddenly amplified by something. The original white flame, the one he had forged in the Volcano Grand Magic zone after years of rigorous training--The King's Flame. King's Flame! There was now so much powerful mana on the field, that the trees began to burst into flames and burn into a crisp. All of the grass had turned black and disappeared into ash. Ardere was displaying more powerful mana than he normally did in a spar, but he did not aim this at Emily, just her spells. The intense show of power was so furious and destructive that even the Wizard King himself would likely feel it across the Capital.
Ardere would even admit to himself, that he was hyping Emily up far more than expected. There was a reason for this. The mage truly did believe that underneath that tough exterior she had built around herself, she had a power inside of her. It only required confidence to come out, and if she had that confidence in herself--she would become an amazing warrior and leader. He was taking a gamble on her right now, one perhaps the other Captains wouldn't. But he wasn't a man who took the "safe option", he was a man who believed in the people around him. The Captain was a man who took chances, because the pay off would be worth it. Only Emily herself could prove whether or not she was worth it, but he was willing to take this risk.
After showing off his power, the fire mage would cancel his spells and give the girl some room to breathe. Likely, she would follow his lead and deactivate any spells she had. He had to admit, he was still feeling the effects of her spell, but this is what he had healing magic for. That was most certainly interesting. You've got a ways to go, girl. But I think you've got what it takes! Walking towards her, he stretched out his arms. Agh. I should've stretched more before this! Cracking his neck and rolling it around, Ardere gave a wide smile to show his fairly white teeth. I just ask one thing of you; prove me right. Show me you got what it takes, Vice Captain Emily. He placed a hand on her shoulder and helped her stabilize if she needed it. They had work to do now, as partners.

Much to her surprise, as her attack was sent out towards the Captain, she felt the mana condense itself and shrink. The girl flinched a bit at the sudden change. As she took another look at her opponent, he was still covered in armor made of white flames. However, she got the strange feeling that it wasn’t necessarily a step down. It was quite the opposite in fact. In addition to the power that he was already expending, the white flames were amplified by another kind of power. Though this power was a spell of his that she was more familiar with. The King’s Flame. Being on the receiving end of the spell for the first time was a different feeling than anything that the girl had ever felt. She could only imagine how it felt to the enemies of the Captain who he actually intended on harming. She gritted her teeth against the overwhelming heat that seemed to char the vegetation around them to a crisp. How was she supposed to beat that? Within an instant, she felt the heat of the mana blaze across the area. It appeared that the fight was far from over. Funnily enough, the Vermillion wasn’t nearly as hurt as she thought she’d be. She knew that the Captain wasn’t going all out against her. He wasn’t trying to kill her after all. But, it was good to know that she could take a few serious hits and still be perfectly fine. It was a possibility, but maybe she wasn’t as frail as she thought that she was, not anymore. [break][break] After the short display of power, the Captain deactivated his spells. The young woman could feel the temperature around them drastically decrease. She didn’t know what to think. Part of her believed that she should’ve still been on edge, but maybe… The girl quickly deactivated her spells, not wishing to cause any more harm to the Captain, regardless of how he felt that he was doing. She knew that he was proficient in healing magic and could take care of himself, but either way, it seemed like he had something to say. He told her that she still had a ways to go, which was an undeniable fact, but he also believed in her abilities, which was nice. The captain approached her, stretching out his arms a bit. The girl stood straight and sheathed her sword. She could still feel her body shaking a bit from all of the adrenaline, but it was good to know that things were finally calming down. She could still feel her heart pounding in her throat. The man placed a hand on her shoulder and spoke to her again. Prove him right? Being addressed as the Vice Captain, the girl couldn’t help but smile. She would’ve cried again, but she was too shocked to do so, not to mention the heat of the area would just cause them to evaporate all over again. The redhead stiffened her previously exhausted facial expression and gave him a nod. “I’ll do my best. I promise I won’t let you down, Captain!” she told him. At this point, she was probably only still on her feet because he was holding onto her, but regardless, she had managed to do it. It took a while, but it was a step forward. She was able to hold up her end of the promise that she made to Forrest, and it felt good. Though now she had more responsibility than ever. To Ardere, the rest of the squad, and even to the kingdom as a Vice Captain. She wasn’t sure when it happened, but she had grown up just a bit. Though, that led her to think a bit about what the Captain spoke about while they were battling. Her ultimate goal... what exactly was it? [break][break]
