The Messiah knew that she was going to need to get new spells, she has been using only measly Junior level spells this whole time, and she was a Senior Ranked mage already, it was crazy. So in order to fix that, she knew that she didn’t have much of a choice but to coerce her spellbook into giving her more spells somehow. It hasn’t given her much at all since she had gotten it way back then, and she was now a Senior Mage with only two spells to her name.
She sat in the middle of one of her churches, in one of its long benches, and she started to stare into her book as she focused. Was it like this how spells were learnt? She had no idea. It was difficult for her to know, given how she had always learnt her spells spontaneously and she hasn’t needed to deliberately try to bust her grimoire to do so. But now, she had to. She has gone through nearly a whole rank of mage knowledge and learnt NOTHING from it. It was ridiculous, and she felt like she had to be doing something wrong here, this wasn’t normal.
And so, she stared down her grimoire and started to think hard about spells, magic, anything.
She focused more, and more, she wouldn’t let herself be beaten by this, her focus was so hard that her face went red like a tomato, so much so that a priest that was hanging out around there approached her with a look of concern on his face.
“Are you alright, Messiah?” he asked.
“Yeah, uh, don’t worry.” she replied, bursting her bubble of concentration and focus.
“Are you sure?” he insisted.
The Messiah would then look back down to her book and continue to focus. Maybe she should ask Yuurei for help, she thought. This was all so troublesome. She wished that she didn’t need to slave out so hard just to learn some dumb spells, but this was how thing were supposed to be, she speculated.
Then, a letter appeared spontaneously in her book. A single C. The Messiah’s eyes brightened up.
Maybe if she focused more she could discover more of the spell? If she meditated more? And so, she did so. She could sense all the emotions that the spell was capable of and that didn't make the spell feel good. She had to focus very carefully to keep trying and to keep using the emotion as a way to focus on her own mind instead, to see if it would give her some power or some insight.
Then there was feeling.
She was very clear on the spell. It was a very powerful spell. She could feel every emotion and thought the spell was capable. She could focus almost like she was focusing on her own thoughts, but the feeling didn't give her anything like a full mind or ability to think. It was a faint feeling that felt like a distant memory, a very distant memory. Maybe that was what it was. She couldn't feel it, so maybe it wasn't a very powerful spell.
The Messiah continued to focus, her eyes closed, trying to imagine further how the spell she was birthing would be like. She meditated intensely, and started to mentally visualize as she focused.
"A beautiful dream of flowers blossom and the sun's rays dancing…the breeze from the ocean…the gentle sway of the waves."
And she felt something.
When the image started to blur, she felt it again. She felt something strong, like a solid.
"I'm so sorry but this is the dream I've always wanted."
She felt something again, like a solid, like it was solid. And when she felt it, she started to imagine it growing with a strong feeling of purpose.
"I feel the weight of countless people's memories on Earth. With the strength of this, no matter where my spirit is, there's a place inside me where I can return to the truth I left."
Just as she had wanted, the spirit she had left was growing.
That is the truth.
That's what was buried in her chest. That was the truth she felt when she had left it.
She continued to focus, gripping onto that feeling that was swelling within her, that mystical, elusive half-dream of feelings and emotion, chasing it and trying to sense out where it would lead her. If her mother could see the spark and let her sense that, she could understand her own feelings even more.
With every breath she took, she found that she needed to reach deeper, to go deeper.
I am all you have, everything, and more.
Her breath came a little quicker as she took her time and tried to find a new place to breathe and to focus. But that was impossible. She was still a little distracted, and felt every bit as she always felt during the deep breathing exercises. The last thing she wanted to do was stop. So she kept going, trying to focus, and with every breath she took, her focus began to falter.
Her whole body was shaking, and there was no sign of her mother in sight – just that sensation of the air leaving her lips to fill up her lungs, and being then expelled with those little sighs.
She knew that she couldn’t stop. She had to continue focusing, she had to continue to steel her mind in order to make this spell appear. Her eyes looked towards the sky for a moment, through a window in the roof of the church, before she shook those thoughts off. The spell itself wasn't really a spell, as far as the grimoire was concerned, she speculated. It was a method of magic that took a lot of concentration, and the more practiced spellmaker would certainly figure it out - the Grimoire would be merely recording something that she should be able to perform anyways, right? It would be a waste not only of magic but of time, of effort, and, most importantly, of body if it was otherwise
She could think, however, and that was her concern. The sky was full of blackness, but it didn't make her feel any better. There was only one option for her, and that was to fight her way out of the uncertainty further with more thoughts.
The girl then attempted to focus more, and to study her own thinking harder, meditating. Her mind was so calm now, it was a little frighteningly peaceful. She was going to figure her way out of her current predicament. She sat for a while, trying to gather a feeling of being whole. Her mind was going wild. She was in blissful meditation, and she didn't even know it. She was finally ready for what was coming. She was going to see what would really happen. Then the world stopped. Slowly, it came back in a slow, quiet, steady motion. She sat up, and it didn't feel real at all. She looked around, not knowing which spot it was. The world started moving again. She was starting to notice it happening again but it was still hard to believe. Then, out of the blue an idea popped into her head. The spell was called “Cherub”.
She was starting to get the hang of this and a real grip on the actual spell. She would just need a little more focus to go through the last parts of meditation and focus and she would finally have the whole spell in her heart, she knew it. The Messiah went to one of the benches in the church in the corner and she went over to sit on it, and then, putting herself in a prayer-like pose with her hands held together and her head leaning down against it, she started to think of what else she would need in order to complete this nearly-complete spell that her deepermost was conjuring up.
She focus, and concentrated, and her mind started to pop up a festival of new thoughts and ideas. But then there was a new thought - and the thought was so bold, it came and went like that. It was a single thought.
It was one of the first times she'd thought of what she wanted to do to become a master, for the world. It was a thought that caught her attention because of what it entailed. It wasn't one of those that had the slightest connection to her life, or a simple 'I'm going to do this!' It was a thought that spoke of something more important…
…and she couldn't help but feel the weight of it on her. She started to wonder, the questions that came in.
"…who, why and to whom, is happiness supposed to serve?"
If nothing else, it was something that she needed a solid answer to.
And the answer came into her Grimoire, as if it had been listening to her. The new spell was ready.
