"Throw me to the wolves, tomorrow I will come back leader of the whole pack."
Ardere took a deep breath as he reached down, sliding his fingers into the earth. Lifting up some of the dirt and grass into his hand, he slowly pushed it between his fingers. Feeling a Diamond free earth was still strange to him. Even after a year since the final battle, he still had dreams about it. And still he worked every day to help repair the country. The damage that had been dealt to them was permanent in a way, but they would learn to move forward. They had mostly rebuilt, but the Forsaken Region was still in such bad shape. Towns entirely destroyed. Farmland razed. It was awful. But they managed to keep working. But now he stood in the Fringe. An area that was once too dangerous to travel in was quite different now. The Diamond kingdom was surely still lurking in the shadows, but for now it was safe. They could trade safely and the Forsaken towns could rebuild.
Standing up from his crouched position, he stared off across the tops of the mountains. It was gorgeous. Rock and trees littered for miles. There were very few vies that could rival this one. And fortunately it was in the middle of nowhere. There was no better place suited for his training. While the Volcano magic zone had its perks, he had used it for far too long. It was time for something new. Years he had spent training with Lysander in the heat, strengthening his body. His power and resilience were almost unmatched, but it was not enough. His spirit needed training as well. A powerful enough illusion mage could pose a serious threat. He had to do something about it. Sensory training was not exactly his forte. Fortunately his Uncle had taught him a concept once before. Hopefully the old man would come meet him on time this time. He had not been in Clover for long, but Ard needed the help. He knew his Uncle needed to catch up on what he missed with his family, but they had all the time in the world now. It was good to have a member of the family back. Samson's avid presence was nice as well. Things were different than before when it was just him and his mother. He had a full family of Lions and Kasai's now.
You been waiting for me all day? A deep voice called from beyond the bushes. Slowly walking out, was his uncle; Suto Kasai. The man looked a bit less scraggly since the last time Ard saw him. Perhaps he had cleaned up a bit. Uncle Suto. Been a little while. You don't look as shitty as last time. The man burst into laughter. Cocking an eyebrow, he stepped forward a bit. Out of the bushes. You've grown. Even since the last time we met. The man was silent for a moment. I hope you got the letter I sent you last year. My condolences to Lysander. It's not very often a man loses two fathers. Ardere nodded. The pain was still lingering. Losing Lysander was a cataclysmic blow. For quite some time he did not know how to handle it. He would wander the Crimson Lion halls for hours. He didn't sleep for months. Sleepless nights. He found himself in tears many times during his solitude. But one thing pulled him out of it; his lions. They were always there for him. Always had his back. No matter what happened. So now even though the pain was still real, the motivation of leading his squad was enough to keep him going. He had aspirations once again. He still had strength to gain. Well I've had a good support group. Suto nodded. That you have. So. What could you possibly need my help with? Not to fuel your ego or anything, ya hot head. But you've made quite the name for yourself. Ardere chuckled. It was true, but that was not why he was here. Uncle. Last time we talked, you mentioned Ki. I know that all living things have this energy, but what is Ki really?
Suto cocked an eyebrow. I knew you'd ask me some day. I wished to teach you before, but we were so pressed on time. Well. You nailed it on the head. Ki is the energy in all living things. It goes beyond mana. Even when your body is out of mana, the Ki is still there. It never really disappears, and it cannot be manipulated with magic either. Mages like your father who had enough sensory to pick out someone in a crowd of a hundred don't have too much use for Ki. It's more for mages like you and I. However anyone can benefit from it, because Ki can be picked out even through illusions or blindness. But if you have the time to master it, you can truly track anyone or anything. Ardere tilted his head and placed his hands on his hips. You mean you can track non living things as well? Suto walked closer and sat on a log in front of Ard, folding his arms. In a word; yes. Everything is made of Ki. When people use the word "aura" they are referring to it. Everyone's is different. If you train Ki, you'll begin to realize it's almost like a scent. And even non living things have a scent. Having Ki Awareness is so useful that you could literally track objects coming your way, even non magical attacks like arrows or swords. You can track that energy and use it to predict their moves. Ardere sat down in front of his uncle, focused on his words. Well if it's that useful, then why doesn't everyone use it? Suto smirked. Well. Most people outside of our homeland don't even acknowledge its existence, but the tactical answer you're looking for does exist as well. You see. It takes such intense concentration that it is going to slow you down a bit. But a big strong guy like you shouldn't be too concerned with it. And if you practice enough, it wont be as bad. It's just going to take a hell of a lot of practice. I'll show you.
"Throw me to the wolves, tomorrow I will come back leader of the whole pack."
Just focus. You have to feel the energy inside of you, Ardere. Suto commanded, as Ardere sat with his legs crossed and eyes closed. In truth, he was focusing. It wasn't until his uncle tapped him on the forehead, that he began to feel anything. The energy in the ground and the trees, he could feel it. Slowly and slowly he began to get a grasp, perhaps of only about a ten meter radius around his body. But it was something. There were a few squirrels roaming nearby that he could sense, and he could feel the worms within the earth. The roots of the trees through the dirt, they gave off energy. It was like he was getting in tune with the earth. He could even feel the energy pulsing through his own body. Everything was different. Everything had its own unique energy. It was odd to think about really. The fire mage never really sought to see the world in this way. He dealt in such absolutes that it was hard to imagine how nature could affect him so seriously. If he could master this skill, then it would help him in more ways than one. Unfortunately it was going to take a lot of meditation, which was not something he often had the patience for. But the motivation to get stronger was high enough to persuade him to continue on. The assistance of his uncle was greatly appreciated. I know you can feel it, but you have to expand on it. Focus on only my voice for a moment, and then nothing. Once I stop talking, you just focus on the world around you. That tingly feeling you get on your spine and the bottom of your nuts a bit, focus on that. Ardere was trying not to laugh at that comment, but then he went back to focusing.
There was nothing but darkness for a moment, and then the energy pulsated throughout his body. Every hair on his body stood up for a moment, and his muscles tingled. It was a small area that he could sense, but it was like everything was there. Even with his eyes closed, he could tell exactly where everything was and what it was doing. Even his uncle had his own energy, unlike any other object or living creature in range. So this was Ki. His understanding of it was so basic for the moment, but he was beginning to get it. He just had to keep trying. Like every technique and spell he learned, he had to just keep using it over and over again until he got it. Exhaling deeply, Ard was sweating a bit. What the hell? Suto tossed him a rag and a bottle of water. Wiping his face and drinking the water, he listening to the man talk. Weird as hell, right? Just focusing and concentrating that hard can seriously overdo it. You're not just using your head, your entire body is being worked here. Every ounce of energy in your body is being used. It's going to wear you the fuck out, that much I can assure you. Finishing up the water, Ardere wiped his face again. I'll get it right. I have to keep trying. Suto smiled. He couldn't help but think about Ryoku at a time like this. The determination between the two men was indistinguishable. But that fire from Fura burned so hot inside of him it was hard to ignore. He had all of their worst traits, but their best ones shone through more often. He wished he had been here to watch the boy he once knew grow into this man. Suto was a powerful warrior and a Ki master, but he was very aware that in terms of raw power, his nephew outclassed him. Hell, he outclassed most. But it was nice to teach someone something. Ryoku had always been the one teaching him things. And now he got to return the favor. I hope this is enough, brother. I'm going to do my best to help him. That much I swear to you. Suto muttered to himself. Alright. Again. Close your eyes and concentrate on what's around you. Let your body do the rest. You've trained for years to be situation-aware. Your muscles know what to do even without you telling them.
Ardere placed his hands on the ground for a moment, adjusting himself. Feeling the breeze roll along, he could sense a bird flying through the trees. It swooped down and up until it landed on a nearby tree branch. It was weird, sensing something move without hearing or seeing it. He had been so used to using his animal instincts, but this was even more intense. The natural flow of energy. Everything in the universe had it. Living or non living. He felt stupid for not understanding this before, but it was the key to getting stronger. He was a physical monster, but if he could compensate for his own lack of sensory a bit then he could increase his usefulness in all situations. The Crimson Lion Captain was a man who lived for combat, but there was a reason he could create constructs and heal. He was still a Captain and an Archmage. His capabilities spanned well beyond just simply punching or stabbing things. And this was why Lysander believed in him. He had a strength. He just had to believe in himself as much as the old man did, and perhaps he would be the best Captain CL had ever seen. They would remember him for years to come. It wasn't his main goal, but he had to admit he had become more ambitious over the years. He wanted to protect his family, but he wanted a legacy. What would be his legacy?
"Throw me to the wolves, tomorrow I will come back leader of the whole pack."
Something was coming towards Ardere. He wasn't allowed to open his eyes, but he could sense it. Activating his mana skin, a red aura shimmered across his body. He could tell the object was coming in fast, and it was powerful. Feeling the world around him, he only had a moment to try and feel what it was. Focusing and concentrating as much as he could, he took slow breaths. It finally became clear. As he felt its energy, the bright light sword appeared. Its speed and location were now known to him, so as he flew towards him he reached up and caught it. Opening his eyes and staring at his uncle, he crushed the sword with his bare hands. Not bad. But let's see how you can do against more than one. The lion kept his eyes closed and stood up. Everything within a ten meter radius was known to him, and as he readied himself dozens of swords appeared around him. He could sense each and every one, but reacting to them with his eyes closed as well was a whole other story.
Reaching his hands out, he summoned two blazing swords in his hands. His signature attack "Arsenal of Flame" was now activated. He kept two swords in his hand and pulled 5 more out. The 5 rotated around him, and he could sense their locations. Due to his practicing, he could now tell which swords were his and which were his uncle's. Their spells had entirely different Ki. Spiraling around, an array of swords began flinging around. Deflecting some with those in his hand, the others were deflected with those orbiting his body. It was honestly an impressive feat, controlling the swords around himself and deflecting some with the ones he wielded. His combat awareness was top tier. Suto could not help but smirk. His nephew was quite the warrior. Ardere spun around, shattering all of the swords around him. Creating a massive spiral of swords, he obliterated all of the blades his uncle sent forth and then leaped up to fire his own at the older man. They were deflected, but the fire mage shot forth. Engaging his uncle in a bit of melee with his eyes closed, the two exchanged blows. Swords were shattered until both only wielded a single on in their hands. Utilizing their Kendo style of sword fighting, slashes and jabs were thrown. Each man's mana skin was cut, but to be honest Suto was impressed the man could keep up with sheer use of Ki. You really are something else. Ard smiled and kicked his uncle back. Then, he fell to his knees. Are you alright? His uncle asked. Yeah I'm good. It's just exhausting, concentrating this hard. But I'll be fine. He was drenched in sweat.
Standing back up, Ardere deactivated his own spell. Don't overdo it. You've done enough for today. I think you've got quite a grasp on it. To be honest, there's not much more I can teach you. You're just going to have to keep practicing until you get it. Increase your range and practice on some illusion mages if you can. That's the only way you're going to get good at it. Otherwise, you did quite well. Panting and chuckling, he wiped some sweat from his brow. Thanks Uncle. It's good to see you. And I'm sure Samson is glad to see you as well. Suto nodded and smirked. Not as much as I would hope, but I can't blame him. I was a deadbeat for a long time. Anyways, let's celebrate with a drink. Pulling out a bottle of sake from his pack, he looked at Ardere. The fire mage could not help but laugh. He couldn't resist a bit of sake. It was not very often he got to drink it. Usually he had whiskey or wine. As long as you keep yourself in check, Uncle. Don't want you falling off the wagon again. The older man cocked an eyebrow. Hey I've been limiting it to a couple of times a month, kid. Don't need you lecturing me. I got my wife doing that enough. The two laughed and sat down to have a drink. Two Kasai's, enjoying company together after a long day of training. They sat there for a couple of hours, exchanging stories and drinking until the bottle was gone. The sun had set across the mountain tops, almost like a painting of pure orange and yellow, with some purple thrown in. It was quite gorgeous. It was hard to believe that just beyond the range was the Diamond Kingdom. Ard didn't like to think about it, but he wondered how they were processing things. Their military had taken some serious losses. What would become of their mortal enemy, and would they return again? They had for hundreds of years, but this last defeat was their most devastating. Never had they lost as many generals or troops as in the final battle of the Shining Stone Palace. He had no doubt new generals had been recruited, and perhaps one day he would meet them on the battlefield as well. Perhaps, there could be peace. If only their government would get their heads out of their asses. If Spade was providing them aid, then they were in for an interesting Autumn and Winter. But things were quiet for now, and he was enjoying it. It gave him time to do things like train and help his squad members. Gather information and learn new things. They were still rebuilding after all. There was still much work to be done, and he made a vow to Vulf to help the Forsaken Region. It had been a year now, but things were still complicated. The other Captains were still adjusting in many ways, while he had the luxury of attaining the position before the final battle. Now, he had a squad to return to. One he cared about deeply. Until we meet again, Uncle.
