Looking up to see that Nephoria had moved up into a safe distance away from the attack zone, Henrietta readied herself.
"Okay, looks like we're good to go. This one is something that I've sort of done before so I don't think it should be that difficult. I mean, honestly, it's pretty similar to the stars gift? Maybe even simpler. Yeah, since it doesn't need to blow up in all the colors it just needs to look like a large piece of ham on a bone falling!"
"This one won't be difficult at all! Okay, let's give it a shot!"
Henrietta readied herself.
"Here we go, Fairytale Magic! The Giant's Ham!"
At her utterance, Henrietta's prismatic miasma surged forward and upwards above the targeted area. Reaching it's destination it formed into the shape and then, neigh instantly popped into a large ham.
"AND DOWN IT GOES!"
Suddenly, gravity took hold of the ham and sent it downwards, picking up speed, until with a dull crash it landed on top of the area like stomach hitting the water during a belly flop. As the ham made landfall the force created a gust of wind pushing up dirt and debris out from underneath the ham. The spell had worked.
"SEE! I KNEW THAT ONE WOULD BE EASY! IT'S EVEN EASIER THAN STAR'S GIFT! I GOT IT ON THE FIRST TRY! AND LOOK AT HOW DELICIOUS IT LOOKS! IT'S EXACTLY, PERFECTLY, AMAZINGLY, DELICIOUS LOOKING JUST LIKE I IMAGINED! WHO'S THE BEST?! I AM! HENRIETTA THE FAIRYTALE WITCH IS THE BEST EVER!"
For good measure, Henrietta gave herself a few victory arm pumps while jumping and cheering herself on. She was quite pleased.
Nephoria nodded. The spell more or less went how Nephoria imagined it would, so she went ahead and scribbled down a little check mark.
"...i still don't know what the star's gift is, but okay... if it's a long story i don't really wanna know..."
Nephoria nodded again as she came in a little closer. She still didn't want to get all that close to the massive hunk of meat, cooked or not. She just felt that something was off about it.
"...hm... the spell seems fine... so i don't really have anything to add... i just wonder a little bit if it would work indoors... it's a spell that needs a bit of room, huh...?"
Nephoria continued to scribble various stats of a sort.
"...okay this one seems done... so what should i watch for next...?"
Nephoria tilted her head as she flipped the page. In her own mind they were making pretty decent progress. Not having a single clue what to expect next also kept her ever so slightly on her toes. Just enough to keep things from being menial. Not that Nephoria particularly minded menial labor, she was rather good at it actually, if left to her own devices.
"Well, all my spells kind of need some room. I like big flashy spells so they're typically not the best for small areas and stuff. I do have some that are smaller for that reason, but I don't know... they're just not as fun maybe? Yeah, not as fun. Still neat though."
Henrietta stretched her arms.
"Alright, well that does it for the easy stuff. The next spells are going to be more advanced so I doubt these will go as smoothly as the rest. A lot of that is just due to this type of stuff being all new to me. I've never tried to make myself take the place of a character before! So, actually thinking about it now, it could go really bad... like I might explode bad. Bah, nothing risked nothing gained though. Might as well give it what I got and worry about everything else later!"
Having mentally readied herself, Henrietta began to explain what she was about to do.
"Okay, so, like I said, these next spells aren't just making something imaginary real like I have been, these are about making the imaginary real, but also the imaginary me. Hmm... that sounds confusing. Well, in simple terms I guess, I'm trying to become Titania the Fairy Queen from my story. If it works, then I could manifest some of her powers, and as my magic got stronger eventually I'd be able to do all the things that she could do! Because technically, in the real world, I would be her! I think before I said it was kind of like dress-up, and it is only it's dress up where you can also do all the things that the person can do. Think of it like, if you could dress up like one of the captains and be wearing their clothes, but then you could also use all the magic and spells they use. Yeah, it's like that! That makes sense."
Happy with her explanation, Henrietta continued.
"So for the first spell, I'm only going to try and transform my finger. Even the finger of the Fairy Queen is pretty powerful so it goes without saying that if I transform my finger I could probably use some pretty cool magic with it right? What I imagine happening is that I'll transform my finger into Titania's, then I'll shoot an attack with it! Buttttt that's just the beginning! Since Titania is the fairy queen and lives in the Wetavian Wilds, she has absolute control of the place! One of her favorite tricks is to switch elements around! It's an easy thing for her to do because in the wilds, everything is like clay and can be changed on a whim! So, if you attacked her with a blast of fire she might like the fire so she might change the spell into something she does like, like flowers!"
Throwing out some bold 'Jazz Hands' as if to say, 'sounds magical right!' Henrietta grinned widely, then continued.
"Fun, right?! Okay so then this is the tricky part of the spell. The way it should work is that I'm going to transform just my finger into Titania's, then, once I've done that I'm going to use the power of her finger to fire an attack. The attack will do damage all on it's own, but it also has a secret ability! The secret ability is that it can transform a specific element, into another, mainly flower because Titania loves flowers and her garden so much. So when the attack collides with the proper element, and if my power is great enough, Titania's magic will hit the spell, transform it into flowers, then continue on hitting the target with an attack!"
Thinking for a moment over everything she had just said, Henrietta nodded feeling that she had covered everything.
"Okay, so any questions or does all that make sense?"
Nephoria added under her breath as Henrietta's lecture continued.
"...i see... so you do have a totem... then... i think that's good..."
Nephoria gave another nod at Henrietta's explanation of the Titania spell.
...so it'd be like me becoming a dragon... yup... don't wanna do that... not one bit... but maybe i'll take some notes for myself... just a little... it could be useful for dragon making later...
"...no questions... it's pretty clear... just listening... i think this spell has the solidest theory behind it... but it does sound a little dangerous... so don't rush..."
Flipping the notepad, Nephoria once again rose into the air on her mount. She was getting further and further. Suddenly however, a thought struck her. Cupping cupping her hands and shouting in her characteristically dull tone,
"-----ah... what should i look for, to tell that you have the finger of tizania...?"
"Oh, I meant to ask you. What's a totem? Like, an art thing? I don't really have any idea what you're talking about when you say that. I think I heard the word when I was doing some research back at HQ, but I didn't really get it and it wasn't important to I didn't care. They're like... poles right? Decorative poles or something? I dunno."
Henrietta scratched her head.
"And what are the poles for? Are they just decorative? Where did you even hear about totem poles? Or are you not talking about the totem pole and just a totem? Isn't it like an animal spirit or something? Like, a spirit of an animal that helps you? Or maybe just a spirit? Is a totem a spirit?"
It was very easy to side track Henrietta when bringing up things she had even a slight interest in. Seemingly, totems, spirits, odd magics, and the like were all under Henrietta's umbrella of interest. Spirits themselves were particularly interesting and had actually partially served as the inspiration for the fairies of Henrietta's imaginary world, though she probably wouldn't admit that if you asked her. As beings of concentrated mana, fairies tended to have strong powers but also personalities.
This manifestation of mana given life intrigued Henrietta as it was a natural form of what she believed her magic's potential to be. Though Henrietta had never seen a spirit, she had read about them in the Coral Peacock library, especially books concerning the four major spirits. For Henrietta, having a spirit ally of her own would be an amazing occurrence, but just as amazing would be learning how spirits manifest, are made, and come into being. The reason for this was simple, if Henrietta could learn how to use her magic to mimic the formation of spirits, the creatures and items she created with her magic would just be that more real.
"I don't think you're talking about poles though, and the only animal you really ever talk about is dragons. So, what the heck is a totem? Not that I think I need one... or maybe I do?"
"...spirit's are rare... i wouldn't worry about them..."
Nephoria said as she landed again.
...Henny's false... starting again... she needs to work on her focus... a totem is... hm... how do i... explain...
Grabbing a nearby stick, Nephoria picked it up.
"...this is a stick..."
Nodding, she then she twirled it.
"...this stick is a sword..."
She nodded, swinging it.
"...it isn't really a sword... but it could be... if i wanted to... this stick... is not unlike... a sword... so... to get it to be a sword all that i would have to do is..."
Exhaling, Nephoria's grimoire appeared and a gemstone structure in the shape of a sword came to encase the stick like an icicle. Nephoria swung it once more before letting the magic dissipate.
"...in this case... mr stick... is a totem... like a guide... so long as i can remember the feeling of the stick... i can easily... make the leap to the sword..."
In her left hand, Nephoria materialized the sword out of gemstone once more, this time without the stick. The sword then shrunk into a gemstone stick.
"...and going the other way... mr sword... is not unlike a stick... so... i can go this way too... it's all... gradual..."
"...most people can do easy stuff naturally... but i find... for more complex stuff... it's good to have a good mental image... of the spell... from both the inside... and out... i really like to know how something is working... on all levels... so i can continue to iterate... on it..."
The gemsword in her left hand dissipated leaving her only with the stick in her right once more.
"...that is one type of totem... but there are other kinds too... they are tools... of focus... like how some people... use wands to focus..."
Drawing a circle in the dirt, Nephoria then drew a number of symbols before embedding the dirt in the ground in the middle.
"...this is called... a nephoria array... there's other kinds of other arrays but they're not quite right... this once is a dragon array attuning to the planetary dragon current by way of the dragonal directions..."
"...but what's important for this example is the stick... in a totem array... if you can imagine a straight space... you can usually form a mental array through a disciplined... memory... like staring at a spot... then moving and seeing it somewhere else... or being able to judge a witchball field's length... roughly by sight..."
Placing her hands one her hips, Nephoria stopped to think.
"...an array is another kind of totem... it can be handy for figuring out spacing... in a field... like if... a dungeon was just a blank space... or you were lost in a forest... it could help your spells find their way... hm... yeah..."
Clapping her hands twice in reverence, Nephoria erased the circle and retrieved the stick.
"...the third totem is a tracer guide... like throwing a stone in a pond... to measure the ripples... or see how deep it is... or if you're lost... you can take this stick... and mark a tree..."
Nephoria took the stick and leaned it against the tree.
"...it becomes special and separate... from everything else... this can be handy within an array... or just for funsies..."
Nephoria retrieved the stick one final time, regarding it, and finally placing it in her pack. She'd grown attached to it.
"...totems are mental shortcuts... operating... on metaphor... and tying ourselves... to the space around us... it's on a principle... similar... to mana zone... but in a thought sense... rather than physical... though i imagine... one must help with the other..."
Crossing her arms, Nephoria gave her whole little treatise one great push of thought.
"...i think... the important thing in magic... is to have a strong mental image... and to be able to arrive at that image... quickly... and consistently... if we become wishy...washy... we'll never be consistent... and the spell might flounder... a strong soul... requires a strong mind... and a strong body... yes... i think it is important for us to be fully immersed in magic... you're doing that... i just think you need to focus on a strong consistent, feeling for your spells... ...anyway that's the basic of totems... it's some of the reason i carve dragons... the other being that they're, the best..."
Finally, Nephoria stopped talking. Whether her words were of any use at all was questionable, much of what Nephoria had stated was pet theory, and besides that fact, Nephoria and Henrietta simply seemed to approach magic from two completely opposite directions.
"...speaking of spirits, though... the dragon force... might be a kind of totem... for me... yeah... though my element is dragon... so it gets a little blurred."

What the heck is she saying? I don't get it at all...
Henrietta tried to follow Nephoria's logic but with sticks, swords, and dragonforce all of it kind of muddled together into non-sense. Still, not everything was wholly lost on the Fairytale Witch.
Okay, so from what I gather she's saying that... I need to... Hmm...
Henrietta once again tried to make sense of what Nephoria was saying.
Ugh... try harder? Ohh... ohhh! I think maybe I get something! I'm not sure if this is what she was trying to say, but maybe I'm trying to focus too hard on how it should work and just make it work! Like, if instead of getting every little thing right... like this should change to this and this should do this... maybe I just need decide that it works because it works! That makes things a lot easier! Instead of having to say, this works like this because mana does this and fuses her and integrates her, I can just say this magic works like this because I say it does! And even if it doesn't make sense, it doesn't matter! After all, this type of magic is based off and comes from me! It's my imagination! If I want something to work, I don't have to make it mesh with the rules of the real world, with my magic I'll just supersede the rules of the real world! It's like my other spell! Wetavian Wilds! It doesn't really matter how it works, and it doesn't matter if the spell's rules don't mesh with the rules of reality, because the power behind my spell is changing reality in the first place! So instead of trying to figure out how I would take on the guise of something from my world in the real world, I just need to make my world into the real world! Like painting over an already finished picture! Hehehe... it's a little like vandalism! But so what! I'm the creator of my world! Anything I say goes! So as long as I manifest my world over the real one, whatever I want to happen, can happen! YES! I'M READY FOR ANOTHER SHOT!
After a rather long internal dialogue, Henrietta turned to Nephoria and gave her a thumbs up.
"I think I got it. Not the totem part, I'm not really sure about anything you just said concerning that, except that maybe I should try harder and to just do it. That's what you were trying to say right? Well, anyway this is what I'm thinking. Basically, I'm getting caught up on the 'how it works part'. Like, I'm trying to figure out how the spell works so I understand how it works in the real world. But I also think it doesn't matter. My magic makes things I imagine real, so I don't need to know how a spell works. If it works in my imagination because I told it, it should, then that should be enough! It's like... hmm... if in my head I say horses fly, it doesn't matter how. So in the real world, using my magic if I want a horse to fly, I don't need to worry about putting wings on it or trying make the horse have a quality of a bird. With my magic, if I say a horse flies, then I can make it that in this world, the horse will fly. It's like that. Only I'm not trying to make a horse fly. That makes sense, right? Well it makes sense to me!"
Henrietta prepped herself for another attempt at casting the spell.
"Okay, I'm ready, whenever you are we'll give this another shot!"
"...that is the complete opposite of what i was saying..."
Nephoria nodded astutely and unperturbed. Seeing that Henrietta was (probably) raring to go, Nephoria resummoned her dragon scooter and took to the sky for what must have been the hundredth time that day.
"...just be sure you actually cast the spell and don't get distracted..."
She nodded again.
"...because this page of notes has been empty for awhile, yeah..."
Nephoria's stomach growled
"...and also, i'm getting pretty hungry..."
Twirling the pencil in her hand, Nephoria waited to see what would happen this time. To her credit, she was taking her job seriously, but if we're being honest, there really wasn't a whole lot to do. In fact, Nephoria was beginning to suspect...
...does Henrietta just get lonely easily...?
She tilted her head.
She'd heard that there were certain kinds of people that didn't like to be alone, but Nephoria, as solitary as she was, couldn't quite imagine why.

"Okay, here we go! Attempt one!"
So, what I need to do is use my magic to overwrite the area of space using my magic to make it into what i want to be! Sounds hard! But maybe it won't be? Who knows? Let's give it a shot!
Opening her grimoire, the same prismatic miasma began to seep out. Henrietta held out her finger and pointed towards the target.
"FAIRYTALE MAGIC: FAIRY QUEEN'S FOIL!"
Henrietta looked hesitant as miasma began to swirl around her finger.
"Come on... come on..."
The mana started to dissipate in some places. The spell was unstable.
This isn't going to work! It's not going well... uh oh... uh oh... no! NO NO NO! THIS IS MY MAGIC! IT LISTENS TO ME!
The hesitation from Henrietta's face and she smiled confidently.
"It's my world and my rules!"
The mana stabilized.
"YEAH! JUST LIKE THAT! KEEP GOING!"
Slowly, small pieces of the miasma began to disperse. Underneath the miasma a human-looking, but vaguely odd finger began to appear. The finger was the same size as Henrietta's previous one, the skin tone matched hers, and for all intents and purposes it looked like a working human finger. This is where the similarities ended. Unlike Henrietta's other fingers. This finger seemed pristine, elegant, as if it belonged to someone that had never needed to lift it to get anything they desired. The finger was thin as a pianists. There were no wrinkles, no scars, or blemishes. The nail was perfect, manicured in a faint blue, long-yet not overly so. Though the finger matched the length and skin tone of Henrietta's, one couldn't help but get a sense of an other-worldly quality from it, as if it were too perfect to exist in the world.
Adorning the finger was a single ring that looked to be cut from crystal as opposed to forged from some precious metal. The ring captured and shifted the sunlight as it passed through dazzling the eye. Atop the ring, a large but tasteful lavender colored stone sat cut in a marquise fashion. The stone, which was a type that did not exist naturally in the the world, glowed faintly with an inner light that mingled beautifully with the crystal band.
Finally, the miasma completely dispersed and Henrietta pulled her her close to her face to observe the change.
"I think... I THINK I DID! Oh, but we can't be sure yet... hey Nephoria! I think... I think the transformation's done!"
Henrietta held up her finger.
"See?! It looks right! The next part is the fire test! I should be able to use my transformed finger to fire an attack! Tell me when you're ready!"
Very... fancy... yes... got it... not as fancy as... dragons... but... okay... yeah... there... we... go...
Nephoria had made her note.
"...yes, i see... but don't point it, in my direction... i might get cursed by strange, elves..."
She said with a straight face while clapping earnestly. Lunch was just over this hill, maybe. How many spells did they have to go? Nephoria had long since forgotten the undragon number. But just as well! They were making progress. Maybe.
She readied her pencil.
"...i'm ready on me end... hurry, and fire, before it shafooms..."
With that, Nephoria waited with eyes peeled. She couldn't afford to miss anything.

"Okay, here we go then! Fore!"
Henrietta pointed her finger at the target. Suddenly, a beam of magic issued forth from the finger. The beam looked rather spectacular. Sparkles and flecks of gold and green swirled into a vortex beam issuing forth. As the magic traveled, flowers bloomed within the magic adding pedals of every color imaginable into the spell. Though quite beautiful, the spell was anything but harmless.
The blast struck the target with a force of power that surprised Henrietta causing her to flinch and drag the still firing beam off the mark and across the the rock.
The scene looked like someone had tried to control a water hose with too much pressure. Henrietta held on to her firing arm in an attempt to stabilize herself from dragging her finger, and without the magical attack all over the the area. Finally, with some effort, Henrietta was able to stop the spell.
"Oh man, that didn't go anything like I wanted it to!"
Looking at the area, Henrietta noticed that where the beam of magic hit a trail of the same impossibly colored flowers that formed within the spell had taken root.
"Hmm... this is interesting though. It's like the spell planted the flowers right into everything the spell touched forcing them to grow."
For the present, Henrietta had forgotten about the witch flying above her taking notes. The effects of the spell on the area had left her extremely intrigued.
"I bet this would make gardening a lot easier."
Henrietta began to laugh loudly at her own joke. Then trotted towards the target and the places the spell swept over to get a closer look and the damage and effect of the magic.
"Hmmm.... still, what's interesting is that looking at this closer, it's not like the spell caused the flowers to grow or planted them in the affected areas, it actually transformed what it hit into flowers! It literally made the rocks into flowers! That means that the spell worked! Though it was a bit stronger than I expected... even still, it worked! So, basically.... I DID IT! Sure, I need to work on control and practice and all of that, but my spell worked!"
Henrietta threw her arms up in a cheer.
"AND IF THAT WORKS THEN IT PROVES THAT I WAS RIGHT! I'M NOT ONLY ABLE TO MANIFEST THINGS FROM MY IMAGINATION, I CAN BECOME THEM! I CAN TURN MYSELF INTO WHATEVER I WANT AS LONG AS I DECIDE I CAN! NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!"
Henrietta continued to cheer for herself while breaking out into a small victory dance.
"Oh, yeah, I'm not alone here..."
Turning a upwards towards Nephoria, Henrietta called out.
"Sorry, forgot you were though! Soooo, basically the spell worked but I need to practice controlling it a bit better! I didn't expect the stream of magic to be that strong! I'm going to give it another go if you're ready! This time I know what I'm dealing with so it should be a bit easier. Oh, and did you see how it transformed the rock?! That's a big part of it! It's an attack spell that also transforms what it hits! With a bit of tinkering, it should even be able to transform the magic of others into flowers like this! Since the Fairy Queen can do it, I can do it too!"
As the wiggly-woppily inflatable spell hose came her way, Nephoria immediate sprang into action: she kicked her dragon scooter at it and dove for cover. That cover was a nearby branch of a tall tree.
Looking up above her, Nephoria saw her dragon scooter explode into flowers which were now gently raining down all around her. The witch deeply sighed. In this moment, she was very, very happy that she used magic to make her items. If she didn't the cost of the damage of her vehicle might be... well, she just wouldn't think about it.
Somewhere below her, Nephoria's fellow witch was saying something, as she continued to be draped over a branch like a wet towel.
Nephoria said tiredly as Henrietta babbled.
She said again.
She disagreed yet again with the third assumption.
"...it, didn't work... at all... if you can't control it... it's a bust..."
Nephoria said as she continued to lay there like a fancy bathroom towel. She currently held her hands in front of her head as an X.
Nephoria voiced as Henrietta looked for her.
"...transform it, into a spell that, works, instead..."
Nephoria huffed through an accusatory squint. She remained on the branch with her hands at a diagonal cross.
Post by Henrietta on Sept 20, 2019 12:41:01 GMT -5
"Okay! One more time! No worries though, this time I know what I’m dealing with! The onnnnly reason the spell went all wonky was because I didn’t realize it was going to have so much oomph to it! This time, I’ll be prepared! Not that the spell going all wonky was a bad thing though. Look at all the pretty flowers it made! The area is much prettier thanks to the spell. But anyway, let’s try this again!"
Henrietta took a deep breath and focused.
“Alright then, here we go… round two! Fairytale Magic! Fairy Queen’s Foil!”
As before, Henrietta’s finger was shrouded in her miasma. This time though, the process was obviously going much smoother. Confidently, Henrietta grinned as the magic began to evaporate from the digit. It seemed if nothing else, Henrietta was a quick learner when it came to this kind of thing. Moments later, the finger was changed it that of the Fairy Queen Titania.
“Perfect… and now…”
Aiming the finger with only one hand, Henrietta closed one eye.
“Aim, and… GO!”
Magic poured form Henrietta’s transformed finger only this time it wasn’t a wild stream spraying over the area, but a focused beam of gold and green energy laced with flower petals plowed into the target.
“There we go! Just like that!”
As Henrietta held the beam there more and more of the target began to transform into the same impossibly colored flowers weathering away the target.
“Okay, that’s enough.”
Henrietta cut off the beam and then puffed her breath over the tip of her finger as if she were blowing off smoke.
“Well, mission successful, did you catch that Nephoria?! Did you see how amazing I was?! Hah! Sure you did! Aren't I the greatest?! Now only one more thing to try!”
Listening to Henrietta with a quiet nod, Nephoria went ahead and put an X on the spell anyway. She didn't like it. It lacked the orderly majesty of dragons. It was simply no good.
...well, it worked, at least...
Nephoria sighed looking down at her notepad.
...one more X... for emphasis...
She put another and flipped the page, well and glad to be done with that one. It was a contender for her least favorite along with the creepy meat one. Thinking back on this short----maybe long----day, Nephoria shook her head. The finish line was in sight. This day, which had felt like weeks, a month even, was nearing the end of its labor. It had been a trial. Henrietta's spells were like watching dangerous UMAs (Unidentified. Mysterious. Animals.), one could never tell what one was dealing with-----and what was going to happen once one was done with dealing with them.
...but umas... at least, have a logic, to them... they're a part, of nature... you just have to apply yourself and, you'll find, the answer...
...but this... Nephoria sighed again ...thinking about it, it's a pain... ...not dragons... not even a little...
Nephoria was gazing down at the blank white page, full of any and all possibilities. It almost seemed to suck her in. She was going snow blind, no, *stomach growl* she was hungry.
"...uh oh... getting sleepy... we better..." *yawn*
"...henny... we have to hurry... if i get too hungry... i... *yawn* ...get sleepy..."
Nephoria's eyelids drooped over her dull, listless eyes. She was like a toddler after a very long day. That or a salary man. There is little difference.
