Malaci Dosef shuddered as he approached a building on the outskirts of Sosshi. He had heard some intimidating rumors about this particular squad of Magic Knights, especially as he had asked around town about the location of their "hideout". He had met Ellie Weltenbauer before, the girl who had extended the invitation for him to visit, and she had seemed quite pleasant. He never would have imagined that she and her brother might be a part of this infamous group. Yet here the teenager was, seeking the siblings out, hoping to learn more about their ambitions in exploring the mysteries of the world.
Cautious, Malaci kept a hand on the sleeve at his belt that held his grimoire. It had not been so long ago that the book had been completely blank, but now that he had discovered some of the power held inside, he would be keen to cast some magic to protect himself. Slowly but surely, he came up to the building's entrance and rapped his knuckles on the front door. Then he paused for several seconds...
...No response. Maybe no one was there at the moment? Or perhaps whoever was inside had not heard him...He tried once more, knocking soundly on the door several times. Part of Malaci hoped that no one would answer, that he could turn back and seek passage back to his hometown and forget his anxiety about meeting the Black Bulls. Maybe he would try the publishing house whose card Ellie had given him...

It was probably the most run down and the least populated base among all of the orders of the magic knights. They had a bad reputation among themselves. They had such a bad standing that they often had black stars, some of them balanced it out, but, one thing was for sure, they were filled with people that often stood out in such a weird manner that they could be picked out of a crowd even without their uniforms on. Case in point being the maternal figure and the leader of this rag tag group of delinquents, Kuroko, the captain and rather hard to pin down woman for how she could be. Was she drunk all the time? Was she serious? was she jovial? which was her drunk persona? Which wasn't? She carried herself wonderfully.
The person that opened the door wasn't Elias, it was Kuroko, someone that stood tall, looking down at Malaci while she held in her hand a hand made glass of wine, made from her magic, which she brought up to her lips for a slow sip, "Hello there dear, how can I be of some assistance to you? You looking to join the gang? If so, you better not cause a ruckus and start ruining our gold stars." She sighed, lowering her shoulders, "We finally got out of black star range."
Of course, it could easily be cleared up. Kuroko would know by the name Elias or Ellie who to send Malaci off to. After all, she knew about their little change, everyone in the black bulls knew. And it was the full moon phase still, only seven more days with Elias before Ellie comes back.

Malaci was half a second from turning around and heading back into town when he heard footsteps approaching from inside. He nearly jumped as the door opened and revealed a tall woman holding a glass of wine. She was courteous but cut an intimidating figure as the teenager looked up at her. Though lost for words for a moment, he managed to stammer a quick introduction.
"N-no ma'am, I'm not here to, er...join up. I was hoping-...Er, m-my name is Malaci, and I'm l-..." The awkward boy stopped himself for a second before finishing his sentence, "I'm looking for the Weltenbauers, please."
If the tall woman allowed him to continue, he would start rambling, "I-I'm an acquaintance of Ellie's, you see, and she told me to come here once I was ready. She and Elias are working on a project for their next book, and she mentioned that they might need some assistance, so I thought I'd offer to help. I'm not much of a magician yet, but I-I figure even proofreading or something could be helpful to them, and I really do want to be of some use to them, especially after Ellie was so kind and generous when we first met..."
It was clear that he was a nervous wreck, and Kuroko could easily interject and halt his babbling at any point before his voice trailed off. The gist of his visit was already clear enough: He was looking for Elias and/or Ellie for reasons other than joining their squad of Magic Knights (at least for now).

Kuroko continued to sip from her hand made glass, sputtering for a moment when the person before her mentioned that they weren't here for the Black Bulls, but the Weltenbauers, Ellie specifically. That would make matters quite difficult, considering Ellie was currently inside of Elias' body at the moment. "Right, of course. Well, Ellie might be a bit hard to get a hold of today depending on where she is, but Elias is around. WHy don't you just come in for now and I'll go fetch him?" She said before turning around, ushering the lad in to the building. it was the smallestorder, it was the most meager, and it was very typical of what one would expect from an order with a reputation like it had. There were members going around, arguing or debating things, getting in to fights, enjoying time with each other. Kuroko would just lead Malaci to a nice area to lounge in and socialize with everyone while she would then go look for Elias.
In the meantime, members would of course, start to congregate toward Malaci, looking to find out who the newbie was. Getting up close and wanting to know if he was fresh meat. But, the moment Malaci would mention Ellie or Elias at all, they would take a moment to step back, as if worried for their safety and Malaci's own in associating with the Weltenbauers. "You do know that Elias is in a personal relationship with one of the most dangerous people in the country, right?" "I wouldn't say she's dangerous, she's just..." "Unhinged? Psychotic? Insane?" "No, I was going to say she really loves her work too much." They would yammer about this among themselves.
It was no secret that Elias was in a relationship with someone that was bound to become a captain, or a vice captain at the least, and they were in the Green Mantis. But, they kept true to their word and did not tell Malaci about the curse of Ellie and Elias. That would have to come with time naturally.
When Elias was found, he was in his room, going over his notes about mana beasts, and drawing them down based on the notes and from memory, making diagrams of their anatomy so people could keep themselves ready. Kuroko knocked on the door and asked him if he could come to the front of the base, "Later, I'm working." Probably not the best thing to say to his boss.
The next few moments were dead silent, before Elias was thrown clear across from the hall way in to the wall, a confused look on his face as he hit the ground and his mana skin crackled. Kuroko came walking in to the room, stretching her glass covered arm she had just thrown the kid with. "Alright, you have a visitor, they wanted to speak to you." With that, Kuroko would walk off, going to take care of some work while the two could start to converse.

The Black Bulls' "hideout" was awfully lively that day, and Malaci's presence attracted the attention of some of its rowdy crew members. He was worried when they started asking him questions about his business with them, but a couple mentions of having business with Elias and Ellie sent some of them backpedaling a step or two. Were they really so dangerous or volatile? The answer to that question came swiftly as the Black Bulls started gossiping among themselves, mentioning a relationship of some sort between Elias and "the most dangerous person in the country", whoever that could be.
In the midst of all this, Malaci mostly kept quiet unless addressed directly. He deflected some personal questions, only going so far as to say he was from the Common Region and was there to help the Weltenbauers with a research project. One woman, a short-ish redhead, started teasing him a bit, but he clammed up and sat down to wait, and she eventually grew bored and left. At least he could blend into the background well enough, even in a place like this.
It was not long before one of the Black Bulls came hurtling out of one hallway and into the common room, not too far from Malaci's seat. The amateur magician jumped up from his seat, alarmed, while the woman he had spoken to earlier emerged and "introduced" the two of them. She quickly departed, leaving only Malaci and another boy whom he could only assume was Elias Weltenbauer. Approaching cautiously, the newbie magician held out a hand to the confused Elias, offering to help him to his feet while asking, "Are you alright?"

While Malaci was intent on remaining silent, the various members of the black bulls were keen on moving around, talking among themselves, going back about their business, though everyone seemed to naturally clear the room. Both from Malaci being a bit anti social and the fact that they had a second sense for what was to come, Elias leaving an imprint in the wall while Kuroko walked off, leaving him there to crumble in a bit of pain, sputtering and coughing a little. As he slowly rolled over on to his hands and knees, he would take the hand offered to him. Standing up right when pulled up to his feet. He brought his arms over, one across the other, stretching to the left and right as he stretched out his deltoid and cracked his back left and right.
In his mind Ellie was talking to him, this is that boy we met, remember? at the book signing? He expressed interest in mana beasts, and our book. And then I spoke to him about joining that initiative you are trying to get together. You still wanted to meet him but you keep forgetting? He thought back to her 'yes, yes, I know, I just have been busy.' Yes, I know, you always are. We're going to talk to him now, you know he's gotten stronger, you can feel it, right? ELias looked at Malaci, and then got the feeling this kid did have some power behind him finally. "Yeah, I'm alright. What brings you here today? And to see me of all people?"
He would ask while walking over to sit down on one of the chairs, a sofa really, reclining back on it while looking at Malaci. It was time for them to get down to talking with Malaci. "I'm sure you're here for more than the second autograph to finish the set, right?" He was a bit pmpous, callous, and cunning, everything Ellie wasn't. And it showed.
Post by Malaci Dosef on Jun 28, 2019 14:45:53 GMT -5
Once the Black Bull stood up and brushed himself off, it was simple enough for Malaci to recognize him as Elias Weltenbauer. His eye color and hair color were both identical to Ellie's, as far as he could tell, and he even wore the same style of hooded jacket. The first question that came from Elias was a peculiar one. Had Ellie not mentioned their meeting to him? Or perhaps she had, and it had slipped his mind. It had been a little while since that encounter...A refresher would not hurt, he thought to himself.
As Elias took to a nearby sofa in the common room, Malaci followed him, explaining, "I, er...I met Ellie some time ago, at a book signing. We spoke about your next project, a study of the nature of dungeons, and I offered to help if possible..." Around this point, Elias quipped about signing his autograph, and Malaci realized that he must have remembered the description of that meeting with Ellie. He skipped ahead in his explanation a bit, past the redundant part that Elias must have already known. "Well, when we met that day, I was...lacking in my magical abilities...but I've had some practice since then and learned a couple spells, so I think I might be more capable of lending a hand with your project. T-that is, if you still need the help..."
As he related his intentions to Elias, it occurred to Malaci that he was not having so much difficulty speaking to him as he had imagined. Why had he been so quiet and defensive around the other Black Bulls, though? Their questions had not been so invasive, their attention not so vicious as the schoolyard bullies to which he had become so accustomed, and certainly no more so than Elias'. He fell silent and turned his attention inward to this concern as he waited for a response...

Elias grinned, that manic grin that many had come to expect of someone with a demon inside of them, instead of a demon he was just devoid of positive emotions, well, not entirely, he was just a bit more sadistic, sarcastic, sardonic, and all around sinister compared to Ellie. He was kind with his words, but, one could tell just from talking to him that there were ulterior motives hidden under the thin veil. He just tilted his head, hands in his jacket pockets while he looked at the lad up and down, "Something troubling you?"
"I know you're here to talk about the mana beast thing, and you actually went and got some power. Only question is, can you flip the page? Can you sink the knife? Pull that trigger?" He asked, leaning back while those red eyes stared holes through Malaci. "You are a little quiet, kind of shy, are you SURE you want to keep going down that road? There's always the option to just, you know, toss in the towel, retire from being a mage, just start working a farm. Do you really want to become a magic knight? Or are you just going to see where you stop?" He inquired while having no malice behind the words. He was just pressing on every button he could, wanting to see if he could make his little ward balk.
He wanted to see if Malaci would stand up for himself, see the conviction. There was no worth in someone that wasn't confident in their ability to be an efficient researcher and fighter. If this person was going to continue with the introspective outlook on the world, then Elias was going to take him under his wing, and push him far beyond the edge, hard enough of a push to get clear across a canyon.
In the back of his mind, Ellie was pleading with him to be gentle, to be a bit more level headed. Elias just brought a hand up to his face, covering one eye with the palm of his hand while he looked up at the ceiling, "I want to make sure, I'd hate to be the reason you get hurt out there because you're enamored with our writing. or that you want to study these beasts. There are big ones out there you know. Bigger than mountains. We've been studying plenty lately. There are rumors that there are ones as big as islands. Imagine that." He said while leaning back, looking up at the ceiling.
"Just picture it, ten people no taller than you or me, facing off against a living mountain? Let alone something bigger than an island? Just, glorious, daunting, terrifying. Thrilling." he said while taking a dramatic bow, as if finishing a performance.

Malaci was about to answer Elias when the Magic Knight started grilling him, questioning his conviction and courage. It was not until Elias mentioned not wanting him to get hurt that something struck Malaci. At first, he could not tell what it was. All he knew was that he was angry. As that anger boiled in his mind, it took shape, and he began to understand.
Malaci was finally getting sick and tired of being belittled, told what he could and could not do, whether it was a matter of capability or of permission. He was frustrated with himself for acting juvenile and skittish about a matter that clearly required him to man up and take some responsibility. Beyond that, though, he was mad at Elias for suggesting he had come to satisfy some fanboyish whim. Malaci had finally found some ability, a use for himself. He would not be dismissed as a nuisance, nor as some weak-willed baggage who could not pull his own weight.
His blood boiled. His hands clenched. His stare hardened.
"...Don't do that."
After Elias straightened up, Malaci would lock gazes with those soul-piercing red eyes and explain, "Don't make me second-guess myself. I didn't come here to be some snot-nosed tagalong. I may not be a magic knight, but I am a magician, and I know what I can and can't do. If you don't want me out in the field because you think I'm weak, then give me a copy of your transcripts so I can edit them for you. But don't send me packing just because you don't think I've got the guts. If you need me to be tough, then I'll get tough."
After getting that out of his system, Malaci would suddenly feel a rush of trepidation. Had he gone too far? Had any of his words struck a nerve? Would he need to defend himself, physically or verbally? For the moment, he would only be able maintain his show of willpower and wait for Elias' response, whatever it might be...

Elias just stood there, not moving an inch as Malaci started to talk back after having finally balked and standing up for himself. In his mind, he was giving the I TOLD YOU SO treatment to Ellie, sometimes, negativity with a good intention is what someone needs even more than just being placated, calmed, and coddled. "Who said anything about you packing? I'd rather you tag along and experience it. I'm just sayin," He said while finally leaning back, shrugging his arms while shaking his head, "You better be ready to take lives. Some aren't mana beasts. We're going to have a lot of work ahead of us. Especially if I'm going to make this in to a new magic order so we have some proper funding for our research." He stated, letting drop the grand finale of the scheme.
Turning around and swinging his finger through the air, he drew a diagram of the magic knight orders, and himself. With a flourish of the wrist, his little caricature would drift away from the orders. "You see, quite simply it is becoming a bit stifling to be in the order, sent off on missions, in order to accomplish things that don't line up with our passions. So we leave the nest when we are ready, going out to seek the great potential we have. I'm doing that. I almost have enough to last myself, get a small building started, and all that good stuff." He said while turning back to Malaci, "it's going to be a long game strategy mind you. We might, Ellie and Myself, be in dire straits for a little bit. But, if we get enough people, strong people, we could make a claim to make a new order of magic knights. The first time in generations, centuries maybe. We could dedicate it to the study of the unknown and the hypothetical."
As he said this a drawing of a potential new order was added to the tree of ink that he had created to represent the various orders of magic knights. The new one put on there as a giant question mark. Looking over his shoulder at Malaci. "Purely because we don't get the luxury, as magic knights of particular orders, other than the Black Bulls, to go out and do as we please regularly. For those that also want to partake in these studies, I want to open it up to others." He said before stepping back from the diagram, turning his attention back toward Malaci, "So, what do you think? Could it be done? Is it a bad idea? Thinking about it this way: I have the potential to bring not only myself, but others in to monetary distress. So, I will only be doing this, with a small group mind you, when we have some hedge funds to trim off before we tumble at the roots. If we make it, good, if we don't, we publish as much as we damn ell can and bide our time for the next windfall."
Post by Malaci Dosef on Jul 8, 2019 17:59:16 GMT -5
The idea of having to kill another living being did not sit well with Malaci, but he kept his mouth shut. Openly defying Elias on that point at that moment was not going to serve any purpose. He would instead bide his time and wait for a chance to prove himself capable. In Malaci's silence, the Black Bull started painting a picture of the point he was trying to get across about conducting research as an organization separate from the existing orders of magic knights. As lofty and (maybe) unlikely as this idea sounded, he could tell that Elias was set on pursuing this course, regardless of any hardship. Somehow, that confidence inspired Malaci to an extent...He glanced at the magic knight, then at his diagram, and then back again.
"There are a couple things I don't quite understand," confessed Malaci. "The first is how the organization will support itself financially, at least in the short term. Not everybody takes the time to read, especially not for highly-detailed research topics, so the costs of publishing might outweigh the income that published works might bring in, and I think it'd be wise not to count on sponsorship or research grants entirely. Would the group turn to its members and their individual talents as an alternative?"
He would pause there and reconsider what he had said before continuing. "Maybe it's too soon to think about that just yet...In any case, the other thing I don't get is what the group's official affiliation to the Clover Kingdom would be. Would it be an order of magic knights? Would it be some kind of specialist group outside the knights? Or would it be an entirely independent group?"
Post by Elias Weltenbauer on Jul 9, 2019 23:22:11 GMT -5
Elias turned back toward Malaci, and offered that cheshire grin, taking one step back while swinging his hand to wipe away the diagram, while turning to point at Malaci, "See, you're already proving you can be of use. You've got some good ideas in that brain. You just have to pipe up and voice them. Be a little more active, move, don't stand there like some sentry." He said while moving around, maybe too much. Elias was a very evocative and flamboyant person, moving around quite a lot.
He would sit down and fold his fingers together, forming a little pyramid to rest his chin on, looking up at Malaci with a stern yet confident look, hiding his smile, so all he would see was the feint glow of those red eyes from his face being shaded and overcast by his hood, "We will have to work as mercenaries. If anything. SPecializing in the extermination of mana beasts as a ruse. Research grants would be amicable, yes, but, we need to get more than scholars interested in the subject of mana beasts. We've discussed making primers like the introductory one that many people have. They're like little sheets of paper folded up with the bare bones information, and at the end they provide info on where to get the books." He was muttering a bit, going in to a train of thought with no brakes as he thought and thought aloud.
"That said, people don't like to read unless it's important to their profession, even then, they sometimes don't read and learn by word of mouth. We can't upcharge the books, but, we need to make sure people understand the hardships they could face. Target markets, ugh, if we had someone that understood all of this better. An economist or something." He said with a groan while leaning back on the couch, before righting himself to talk to Malaci more, "So, you want to pursue this? And do you have anything else you want to talk about? Maybe some theories on that giant skeleton over in Hage?"
Post by Malaci Dosef on Jul 12, 2019 22:25:54 GMT -5
Maybe Malaci was just too vexed to take a compliment at the time, but he hardly batted an eye at Elias' praise. The more the Black Bull muttered his stream of consciousness aloud, the more concerned his guest became. Without enough interest and participation, their group would die out fast, and the kingdom's social norms would not do them any favors in that regard. The status quo would need to shift somehow, and soon...
Malaci interrupted his own thoughts to interrupt Elias. "I told you: don't make me second-guess myself. I came to you; don't ask me if I want to do this after I've already told you that I want to do this." That frustration began to boil in him again...but rather than a hot, hateful emotion, he felt fiery passion, and it gave him strength in his conviction. For the longest time, he had considered anger a burden, something that would cloud his judgment. The behavior of the schoolyard bullies who loved to pick on him only reinforced this concept. Maybe the saying was right after all, though: maybe, in moderation, "anger is a gift"...At the very least, he had no qualms channeling his frustration at that moment. If Elias was so unsure of him, he would just need to prove his determination.
That last question confused Malaci. Why was Elias bringing up the skeleton ruins at that particular moment? "Your guess is as good as mine," admitted Malaci, watching and listening intently. "As far as I've been told, it used to be a massive demon or something, but there haven't been any demons in the Clover Kingdom since the first Magic Emperor's time...Wait, are you suggesting that mana beasts might have some connection to the demon corpse...?"
Maybe Elias was just using it as a way to start a conversation or even a debate, but the more Malaci thought about it, the more he realized that he had never seen, read, or heard anything definitive that disproved connections between demons and mana beasts...and Hage could not possibly be the only place where demon remains could be found. If there was any sort of connection, especially so close to populated areas, that could have been the jump-start that they needed for their research campaign...

Elias would look at Malaci, folding his arms and just smirked. "Alright then, Malaci. When I have the organization set up, the infrastructure thereof at least, I will be contacting you. Don't lose this," He would swing his arm, throwing a glob of ink at Malaci. As it flew the ink would come off, revealing a black card with opalescent white ink imbued upon it, lightly glowing in the right angle of light striking it. He would turn around and reorganize the chart, "There are some people I have heard about. See, the benefit of having a girlfriend that's a master assassin and one of the best damn interrogators, she's totally the cutest too, in all of the country, is that I can get information on anyone." He said plainly, he wasn't the strongest, but, ELias had his fingers in a lot of jars of cookies. More fingers than he had hands.
e would sit back, looking up at the ceiling while ruminating about the demon skeleton. He would then speak about his theories on it, "So, here's what I think. I've seen beasts that are much larger than the standard behemoths I have encountered. That being said, there is something I have noticed, there are skeletons for giant mana beasts left behind. In all of my time, I have seen that mana beasts return to the mana upon slain." He said while slowly sitting forward, leaning in toward Malaci, "Mana beasts destroy people, they destroy homes, they destroy land. There are reports of people who have seen entire countries swallowed up by mana beasts. When these die, I believe it's the world's way of returning land mass to us."
"So, I would like to try and study these more, but, as one single person, I wouldn't be able to go up against them on my own. And that is where we can start to close up our conversation for now. I have some notes to compile, and I would like you to find a base of operations for us, just, eyeball the land, try to find something that's a good distance from the various dungeons that pop up." He said to Malaci.
Post by Malaci Dosef on Jul 21, 2019 15:37:51 GMT -5
Showing some of the dexterity he had learned through his recent self-training, Malaci managed to catch the inky-black card in mid-flight, examining its gleaming white print for a moment. It listed ways to get into contact with Elias in the future, which would likely come in handy once the Black Bull's plan was set into motion. After pocketing the contact card, the teenager listened to Elias' theory about the skeleton of Hage and its connection to mana beasts. He seemed confident in the idea that demons and mana beasts were linked somehow; the potential of that link was already conjuring some frightening possibilities in the boy's imagination...
Malaci snapped back to attention when Elias mentioned a task for him: to pan around for locations upon which they might build their future base of operations. Considering that dungeons could pop up just about anywhere at any given moment and disappear just as suddenly, that criterion would not narrow things down much, but if there was one person Malaci knew to ask about property values, it was his father, Pierre, who had done his fair share of research before settling on the current Dosef estate in the Common Region.
"Alright," agreed Malaci, "I'll do some snooping around, see what I can come up with. I'll probably limit my search to the Common Region and maybe the Fringe, unless you have any preference otherwise..."
