Things had been a bit different ever since Emily had encountered Astrid for the first time, and then again during her time in the training dungeon. The woman just couldn’t seem to leave her alone, and it was annoying to say the least. Then again, the young Vermillion supposed she was crossing some spiritual lines by accepting that ring of hers, whatever it was supposed to be. Not to mention the fact that she hadn’t made any activate effort to go and look for Marco or Mavis since she became stronger. She even reached 1st Class Intermediate Magic Knight, and still there wasn’t a single lead she could pick up on. Unfortunately there was nothing else she could do besides being patient and waiting for something to pop up. All her life it seemed like that was all that she’d been doing, but she knew if the two of them were here they’d say the same. Though there was no telling what would happen at any given point in time. The tension with the Diamond Kingdom hadn’t exactly died down, and Emily knew that if either the Clover or Diamond Kingdoms wanted to fight again it was completely possible. Now, being a magic knight, she’d need to go and fight more than ever.
This was exactly why the girl was preparing herself once again. Somehow, she needed to find a way to keep getting stronger. Keep growing, and become what she promised Forrest and Rose she would become, at any cost. This was the truth in the most literal sense. Ever since accepting that power from Astrid, Emily felt stronger. She felt the spirit of the woman within her magic, making her more dangerous to deal with in a fight. However, something wasn’t right. She needed more training when it came to her sword skills. She knew Marco would have some sort of solution for her, if only he were here. “But for now I need to increase my magical power. My spells don’t have enough force on their own, and my little smoke funnel trick to increase the speed and force of my spell isn’t going to cut it forever.” the girl said to herself. Just then, an idea came to life within the young girl’s mind. “Cut… that’s it!” she thought to herself. She held her hand in the shape of a claw and took a deep breath, her grimoire responding to her as it flipped to a brand new page and immediately began creating a spell.
Giving the new spell a quick glance Emily smirked and turned to the nearest training dummy. “Before I had to power up my whip to slice that thing into pieces. This time I won’t need to.” she said. The girl brought back her hand before swiping it across the air in front of her. “Smoke Creation Magic: Lioness Claw!” she shouted. A slash wave of smoke cut across the air, speeding right towards the training dummy. The wave of smoke collided with the straw and cloth, slicing it into two. “Yes!” the girl exclaimed with a smile on her face. It was good for a first run, but now she had to improve it. She needed more than just a little slice. It would become too predictable and easy to dodge. She took a deep breath and focused on another training dummy. “Think more power, more ferocious, less of a place to run away to. I need to corner my opponent.” she thought to herself. The lioness refocused her mind and formed her hand into a claw once more. She then formed her other hand into a claw and smirked. “Well this should get me more results than anything.” she said to herself.
“Now… Smoke Creation Magic: Lioness Claw!” she shouted, swiping both hands horizontally across her body, crossing her arms in the process. The smoke waves traveled from her and sped right towards the next unfortunate dummy. This time, with double the attacks, the training target split in two different spots. The dummy fell over, straw and cloth raining everywhere around where it was defeated. Emily was wearing a proud smile, but it quickly faded. “This can’t be it. I have to be able to do more with this spell or I don’t see a point in using it. I wish I had power like Silas did. He just throws molten spears everywhere and blows stuff up. Unfortunately, smoke doesn’t have a property quite as destructive as lava.” the girl explained. “Even so, I just have to do what I can without magic like that. Smoke is pretty great too.” she said. The Vermillion had to admit, she often times tried to mess around and see if she had a second or hidden element of some sort that would be more fire related. Then again, most of those trials ended in failure and she just had to accept the truth for what it was. Not being an actual Vermillion meant that she probably didn’t have anything like that.
However, she was alright with it in the end. Hopefully one day she’d find out something amazing about herself, if anything amazing existed at all. The child figured that most of her expired when she was accepted into the Vermillion family. The girl slapped her cheeks and took a deep breath. “Alright one last try with even more power than last time. It’s the only way I’ll be able to actually see a use for this in combat.” she told herself. The lioness formed claws with both of her hands and prepared to attempt the same motions as before. Picking a new training dummy as a target, the flaming-haired girl lined herself up and prepared to strike. “Smoke Creation Magic: Lioness Claw!” Emily shouted as she swiped her hands from the outside of her body to the inside, releasing two waves of smoke. The girl sliced both hands back outwards, in reverse of the first motion, releasing a third wave of smoke. The dummy was sliced to bits by the slash waves, not standing a chance at all in the face of the Vermillion’s attack. A wide grin slowly crept onto the girl’s face. “I did it!” she exclaimed, pumping her fist into the air.
The young Vermillion’s training was far from over though. She took a deep breath as she examined her hand. “I got through that last spell without anything strange happening. Hopefully it stays that way.” she told herself. The last thing she wanted was to make any sort of contact with Astrid. “Whatever she did to me back there, she did it easily. She made it very clear that it took no effort to cause me that much pain. If she wanted to kill me then she easily could.” the girl thought. She then frowned, “But then again, if that’s the case and she really hates me that much, then why doesn’t she just kill me? It must have something to do with this ring, but what?” she asked herself. However, she came to the conclusion that it was just better if she didn’t ask anymore questions. She didn’t know the full powers that came with that ring quite yet, but in time the young Vermillion would come to find out that on the day she accepted that curse, she bit off a little more than what she could chew. “I should get back to practicing.” she told herself, refocusing on her grimoire.
The girl then had a random memory appear very clearly at the forefront of her mind. It was from a time not too long ago. Emily was maybe twelve years old or so. She was sitting in her room at the Crimson Lions base with her mentor, Mavis. The younger girl had just gotten done reading a book about the history of the Lions squad, or at least what parts of it she wanted to read, the whole book was too big for her attention span at the time. Mavis could tell that the girl’s eyes were glazing over and had decided to pull her aside for a bit of a talk. “You’ve been working really hard kid, and Marco and I think that you’re going to be capable of some amazing things one day. As long as you keep practicing that is.” she said with a smile, placing a hand on the girl’s head. Just then, Marco came in the room with food, noticing his sister and Emily. “Anyone want some?” the knight asked with a piece of bread hanging out of his mouth. Emily laughed a bit at the overall nonchalant attitude that the older boy had most of the time. It only helped to make the two of them seem as welcoming as they were, as welcoming as they’d always been to her.
Emily sprang up from her chair, “Marco can you show me that spell again?” she asked with excitement in her voice. “Which one?” the orange-haired mage asked, knowing fully well which spell she was referring to. “Ugh Marco you always say that! You know which spell I mean!” she responded, persistent in her effort to get him to hurry up and show her the spell already. The man simply smiled and turned to walk outside. Once the three of them were outside in the practice field, the very same practice field that Emily was on to this day, Marco prepared to fire off his spell. “Flame Creation Magic: Twisting Flame Roar!” the man shouted, releasing two bursts of flame from his mouth that first intertwined with one another before rapidly spinning, picking up rotation speed as it travelled. It slammed into the training dummy with amazing force, reducing it to a pile of straw. Emily watched in awe at the destructive power of the spell. “Will I be able to do something like that if I keep practicing Mavis?” the girl asked. The older girl shrugged, “Who knows? That’ll be up to you someday.” she responded. Emily returned to reality and smirked, “That someday is today Mavis.” she said to herself.
The girl clenched her hands into fists and widened her stance a bit as she concentrated her magical power. Her grimoire responded accordingly, inscribing a new spell on the next available blank page. “It probably won’t be as destructive as Marco’s was back then, but I already learned that I can’t just go around trying to fight like everyone else.” she said as her mana continued to build, whipping up a bit of a wind around her. “Smoke Creation Magic: Intimidating Roar!” the girl shouted. She reared her head back and took a deep breath before forcefully expelling the air. Out from her mouth shot smoke, pulsating outwards in all directions from her body. It was coming off in one continuous wave. The girl could feel the heat of the smoke from the epicenter of the attack, but of course it didn’t affect her enough for it to matter. The girl’s scream was less of a scream, and more of a deeper battle cry. Just like an actual roar should be. Fierce and striking. The main portion of the attack began to die down, but the girl figured out that she could still sustain the pulsating smoke that came with her attack. She just had to release it in waves rather than in one huge continuous wave.
Emily then heard random laughing. Though it wasn’t exactly random, the voice behind the laughter was familiar. “Astrid.” Emily simply thought to herself. “That’s right. It’s me again. I see you’re still doing your best to get strong.” the woman said mockingly. Emily grunted at the taunt and wanted desperately to say something back, but she knew exactly where that would get her. All of a sudden, her scenery shifted. She was now standing within what she assumed was her own subconscious. Astrid’s spirit was floating right in front of her as a blob of purple-black smoke. Almost like a cloud of venom. “Keep getting even more powerful you brat. Soon you’ll be useful enough for me to not want to slaughter you on the spot.” she said before letting out a devious laugh. Emily was a bit scared, as any sane person would be in the presence of someone who was talking like Astrid was, and could actually back it up. “Why do you keep bothering me like this? What do you want?!” Emily was able to force out. Astrid stopped her laughing, “Nothing… nothing yet anyway.” she simply said as she began to fade out of sight. Emily opened her eyes and quickly looked around, making sure no one was a witness to her just standing in place. She glanced at her ring quickly only to find out that it had still been bound to her, just like before. Emily didn't quite like everything that Astrid was saying. Each time they came into contact with one another, the flaming-haired girl could feel that she was moving in a direction that wouldn't turn out too well for her. Though that was just something she had to accept with the curse she bore. "The curse gives, and the curse takes." Emily said to herself, repeating those same words she found inscribed on the letter next to the ring that day. With each reiteration of the text, more fear spread throughout the girl's mind as to what it really was that she accepted on that day? What was she going to gain, and how much would be taken away? Sadly, there was only one way to find out.
