It was six in the morning when the young lion woke up. Silas looked around wondering were he was for a second before remembering he was in his own house. The vermilion had just moved in a few days ago so he was still get use to everything. He would get out of bed and open his curtains to let the light shine in his room. The young lion would then walk over to his closet to change into his workout outfit. He would walk downstairs and have a quick breakfast before walking outside to start training. He did his normal workout of push ups,sit ups and pull ups followed by a five mile run.
The lava mage wouldn't be able to practice with his mage as he didn't want to harm any building as well as he was unsure if he was allowed to train with his lava in the town. After finishing his training he would go inside to take a shower before changing into a different set of clothes. Silas would wear his whitish tan mage cloak but would leave the hood he normally wore with it at home. The lava mage would then put on his crimson lion mantle before leaving his empty house as he had yet to get furniture for his house. Silas would lock his door before heading out of town to the royal capital. As he walked down the street someone the towns people would smile and wave at him while some would look at him in a distasteful way. Silas could understand why he got mixed reactions as the commoners blamed the nobles for the way and Silas was a vermilion one of the greater noble house which to some people had him worse than other nobles.
Silas would just ignore the people as he was on important personal business today. He had sent a letter to the vice captain of the crimson lion asking if they could talk. The young vermilion hoped that Ardere had gotten the letter in time or this could be awkward. Silas would make it to the edge of the royal capital at eleven in the morning. The lava mage would stop for a drink and to rest after his long walk. He would sit outside as he drank his tea so he could look at the sky. It was a nice and cool day out today the sky was mostly clear there was a few white clouds in the sky and the town was busy but that was nothing new.
After finishing his drink he would make his way to the crimson lions base. He would start to walk to the vice captains office but would be stopped by his sister. The two vermilion would talk for a bit before Silas would tell Emily he had to go meet with the vice captain but that he wasn't in trouble. He would walk town the hall passing his own room before arriving at the door to the vice captains office. Silas would stop right at the door before taking a deep breath. This conversation was either going to go good or bad Silas hoped it would be good but it would just depend on how he spoke to Ardere. Silas would then knock on the door."Vice Captain Kasai are you here? It's Silas Vermilion i sent you a letter a few days ago."
Most Crimson Lions got to bed early after a hard day of training, only to wake up the next day bright and early to do it all over again. Ardere had a bad tendency of spending all evening and into the night training, barely getting any sleep. So occasionally when he was not bombarded by mission requests or war updates, he found himself asleep in his office. This exact situation was very true of today. The Vice Captain had spent all night and even into the early morning training. He was close to the point that he felt like he would be ready to take over as Captain, at least strength wise. Whether or not he was mentally prepared was not up to him, but Lysander.
So on this fine morning with the sun out and the cool breeze rustling through the leaves, the fire mage lightly snored away in his office. It was a very quiet snore that one would only be able to hear if they were next to him. His feet were propped up against the top of his desk while he reclined in his chair slightly. There was a mountain of paperwork scattered about that he had finished recently and needed to turn in whenever he was not deep in slumber. It had been a pretty good night of training after all, he deserved some rest. Unfortunately during this time, Ardere had neglected to remember that he had a meeting with one of his squad mates today.
Deep in the abyss of sleep, Ardere dreamed of one thing; peace and quiet. While it was in his blood to love fighting and combat, war was different. War was not a mission or an adventurous dungeon to be conquered, it was cruel and hateful. There was far too much bloodshed for his tastes. And as such, he merely dreamed of some peace and quiet. Hopefully one day, they could all attain this. It was in this dream, that his animal-like senses managed to hear footsteps coming his way, and he abruptly awoke. Flinging up from his desk and sitting up in his chair, paperwork flew all over the floor. Rubbing his eyes, he ran fingers through his ruffled hair. I'm up!
Ah yes, Silas. I was totally expecting you! The truth was, Ardere had actually forgotten. He probably would have remembered if he hadn't gone so hard in his training. Bashing through solid rock for hours tended to have that effect on a person. Taking a deep breath, he attempted to fix his hair. He was surprised he had even remembered to take off his armor and put it up on the side of his office, leaving only his red jacket and crimson lion cloak on atop his formal pants and undershirt. Come on in. What can I help ya with? He was speaking loudly for no reason, probably to act like he wasn't just asleep. Moving his jaw around, he sighed a bit. Pulling a glass of water over to himself, he chugged it. How much sleep had he actually gotten? He had no idea, but he was now attempting to pretend like he had already been up a while. 'Let's see how this goes..' He thought.

After a few minutes after knocking on the door Ardere would tell Silas he was expecting him and to come in and ask what he could help him with. The young vermilion would let out a sigh of relief. The conversion wouldn't be awkward at the start but Silas knew it could turn sour quick depending on how he spoke to the vice captain. The young lion would then open the door and walk inside shutting it behind him as he wanted this to be a private talk. The young vermilion wouldn't hide his intentions of become the next vice captain when Ardere replaced Lysander. That of course didn't mean that Silas wanted everyone to hear what he would talk to the current vice captain about. The young lion would then look around the room the room for a second.
The desk was filled up with paperwork some of which looked as if it had been knocked on to the floor. There was also a set of armor in the corner of the room. It looked to be in a great condition but there was battle damage on it which was to be expected. Silas would then look over at his vice captain. He had seen the man around the base a few times but this would be the first time the two lions spoke to each other. Ardere was wearing what Silas could only assume was his normal outfit of course his magic knight mantle which had his vice captain insignia on it. That was the same insignia Silas hoped to wear someday soon. The thing that stuck out the most to Silas wasn't the mans hair but the scars on the mans body as each one had its own story.
The lava mage had scars of his own but they were covered by his shirt. Silas realized that he had yet to greet or tell Vice Captain Kasai what he wanted to speak about. Silas would take a deep breath well here goes nothing don't fuck it up the young mage would think to himself."Good morning Sir sorry it took me so long to speak i was lost in thought. I wanted to talk to you today about the title of vice captain. Don't get me wrong i'm not here to challenge you for it i'm hoping to replace your spot when you become the next captain. I just have a few questions that I'll ask one at a time." Silas would take a pause to breath and take a moment to let the other man take in what was just told to him."I guess my first question is what made you want to become vice captain?" As Silas waited for Ardere to respond he would start to get a little nervous was this really the best question to ask first?
It took a moment for Silas to speak. Ardere thanked God because he still was not entirely awake. The fire mage used these few seconds to compose himself and attempt to wake the hell up. It took a moment for the words the young Vermillion was saying to register in his brain. Hmm. It was not very often that the Kasai was so quiet in response to such a conversation. Truly he had to think about the proper words to say. It was also not often that anyone came to ask him such a loaded question. No worries man. I've been in this squad a long time. I'm hoping that some day I do in fact take over for our old lion. If the bastard ever retires. I'm pretty sure he'll keep fighting until he falls down some stairs and ruins his back. Actually, probably not even then. I could see him running around with a flaming walker or wheelchair. Chuckling to himself, he knew that was partially a fantasy. Lysander was still one of the most powerful mages in the Kingdom, but he would be looking for a successor eventually. While the Vice Captain was usually next in line, he had to wonder if he was ready. He felt ready at least.
Shoving some of the paperwork on his desk to the side, Ardere placed his elbows on the table. I guess the easy answer is I wanted to be Vice Captain because it was the easiest way to secure a position as Captain some day. Looking out the window as the bright light began to shine, being nearly high noon. The brown haired man stroked his chin softly. He chose his words carefully. As for why I wanna be Captain, that's the real question. I'm sure you've heard through the grapevine, but in case you haven't; my father was the Purple Orca Captain before Jagen. While most current magic knights knew this, a knight as young as Silas might not. He was a Noble, but no assumptions could be made because of that. I guess I've always wanted to live up to my father's reputation. To carry out his dream. Since he was murdered, it's been me and my mother. But every day I get closer and closer to that goal. My father really just wanted to protect people. I wish I could say I was obsessed with the glory and fame, but that's not really true. I just wanna be the strongest, so once I hit that point I can protect the people he cared for, and the ones I care for now. Laughing to himself, Ardere ran pale fingers through his red and brown hair. Seems I went on a bit of a tangent. Sometimes you gotta tell me to shut the fuck up. Haha. Well I hope that answers your question.
Silas would stand in place as he waited for the Vice Captain to speak. The young vermilion understood why he didn't respond right away as this wasn't the type of question you get asked everyday. After a minute or two Ardere would tell Silas he didn't have to worry which made it feel as if a heavy weight was lifted of the young lion's shoulder. The older mage would then go on to explain he was hoping to replace Captain Lysander. Silas would laugh a little as the Vice Captain said he could see Lysander fighting with a flaming wheelchair or walker. Every crimson lion knew how strong the captain was even someone as new as the young vermilion. Silas had no doubt that Lysander was easily one of the strongest mages in the kingdom. Hell he could possibility be the strongest captain the young lion had no way of know as he had never met any of the captains other than his own.
Ardere would then tell Silas that the easy answer as to why he became vice captain was because it was the easiest why to become captain. This made sense to the young lion as most mages who become vice captain did it just to become captain. There was nothing wrong with that way of thinking but Silas had no desire to become captain. Vice Captain Kasai would then go one to explain why he wants to become captain. The older mage would go on to explain that his father the the captain of the purple orca before the current captain Jagen. Silas had heard the name of the old captain but he was a small lad when he was killed so he only knew the name. Silas should have put two and two together sooner but he didn't so now here he was finding out Ardere was the son of a captain.
It was a small detail to be honest but a good one to know. The older mage would then go onto explain he doesn't want to be captain for glory and fame but to protect those his father cared about as well as the people he cared about. The two mages had similar dreams. So mayhap the young lions dream wasn't as foolish as it seemed. Ardere would then say that it looks like he went of on a tangent and Silas needs to tell him to shut the hell up sometimes and hopefully that answered his question. It did answer his question but Silas also wondered in the man was joking about the young lion needed to tell him to shut the hell up sometimes."I'm sorry to hear about your father. Yes that does answer my question and i guess are dreams are not that different from each other. I guess my next question is what do you think it takes to be a vice captain. I know it takes being a good leader and having power but surely there is more than that?"
Ardere popped his feet up on the desk. It was his own desk after all. He could do with it as he pleased. Letting a slight yawn escape from his mouth, he quickly smacked his cheeks lightly. Now he was a bit more alert. Silas had posed a solid question. Truthfully the fire mage thought about that sort of thing a lot during his career as Vice Captain. What really made a good leader? That was the vice's job after all. They were in charge when the Captain was not around and they were more often than not the commanding officer on missions. This answer did not take as long to formulate, but he did make sure that he got it right. Nobody really walked into Ard's office and asked him questions about his position. Then again, perhaps it was a sign of strong resolve and determination. This was something he respected.
I mean to put it simply, you have to be the one person who embodies everything your squad represents. Even if you have no intention of becoming Captain, a Vice must represent the squad in many situations. It's different for every squad, but for us lions you have to simply have the claws to defend the squad. And I don't just mean physical or magical strength. You have to possess the will. Being a Crimson Lion is all about will. I would say us and the Purple Orcas both embody that trait. Standing in the face of adversity we are the sword and shield squads. We have to be ready to fight for what we believe in. Sticking to your beliefs. Your belief in your friends and the idea that this kingdom will continue to get better even after all we've suffered. If you can defend that with all you've got, not only will you make a good leader but a good Magic Knight. Such a serious answer, but of course it was followed up with a typical Ardere style punch line. That and you gotta either like kicking ass or saving your team mates from getting their asses kicked. As is the way of a Lion. Looking off in the distance, he peered out the window at the rest of the massive fortress they called home. It was strong and reliable, just like he imagined their squad to be. We're a lion pride here. To be the Vice or the Captain, you have to be able to summon the strength of the entire pride. Whether it's by yourself with your ass against the wall, or standing side by side your comrades. Without the entire pride, the Lion King falls. Lysander taught me that. The fire mage remembered the words he said when he became a Royal Knight. The lion squad was his hide, an indestructible hide that carried him through battles. And he was their fangs, strong enough to tear through any of their enemies.
The Vice Captain turned it around on Silas, looking back to the young Vermillion. So let me ask you. What do you think the purpose of a Magic Knight is? What is it that we really do, and why do we do it? A simple question, but it prompted an answer more than the regular one. They were soldiers of course, but they were more than that. They were warriors who fought for their home, all of their homes. Each squad had their own goals and mottos, but they all ultimately just wanted to defend the people of this kingdom. Ardere knew this, but there was so much more to it. He wanted to know what Silas felt in his heart. It was the most important thing in a lion after all; their heart. It was what decided all that will and determination he spoke of before.
The Vice captain would let out a yawn before smacking his cheeks which seemed to wake him up a little. At least Silas thought he looked more awake now perhaps he was still as tired. The young lion thought it would take Ard a few minutes to answer the question as the young Vermilion thought it was a hard one. Much to the lava mages surprise it seemed that the vice captain already had an answer. The older mage would tell Silas that you have to be the one person to embody what the squad represents. The young Vermilion wondered if he did sure he felt as if he did but what did others and the squad think of him. Mayhap he would ask his younger sister this sometime as he felt she wouldn't lie to him.
Ardere would then go on to explain that even if a vice captain didn't wish to become captain they still needed represent the squad in most situations. The young lion knew why that was important after all if the captain is gone it falls on the vice to lead the squad and keep the pride going. Ard would then explain that it was different for every squad but for the Crimson Lion Kings it was about defending the squad with your claws. The vice captain would say that he doesn't mean just magical or physical strength it takes will as well. This was perhaps the hardest part for the young lion sure he had a strong will to help his squad and those he cared about but he was broken on the inside. It wasn't as bad as when he first joined but it was still there none the less. The older mage would then say that he felt the crimson lions and purple orca had a lot in common as they were the shield and sword of the kingdom.
Silas could agree with this the young vermilion had a lot of respect of the squad and that most likely would have been his second choice if he didn't join the crimson lions. Ardere would then go on to explain they had to be ready to fight for there beliefs after the more serious topic Ard would lighten the mood a little. This would make the young Vermilion smile as he looked out the window. The Vice Captain would tell Silas that as vice captain or captain they have to be able to summon the pride. It was something that Lysander taught him so Silas would make sure to remember those words. Ardere would the turn the table on the young lion and asked him. What do you think the purpose of a Magic Knight is? What is it that we really do, and why do we do it? Silas would get ready to speak but would then pause. It was a simple question but he wanted to know what the young vermilion thinks.
"Well i think the purpose of the magic knights is more than just defending the people. It about defending them and the beliefs of the kingdom as a whole. As for why we do it the answer is different for everyone. As for why I do this its not for honor or glory. I became a Magic Knight to protect those I love and the people who can't defend themselves. I also feel like it was my fate to become one. I hope that answers you question and I guess i have one more for you. This one is a bit more personal. I have a strong will but I'm broken on the inside so how can i expect the squad to trust someone who's broken?
Hmm. Ardere looked at Silas for a moment. The Vice Captain did like the younger mage's answer, but there was something more to it. He believe heavily in the boy's determination to protect those he cared for, but if he did not believe in himself then he would run into some issues. This was especially true if he did not feel like he could rely on the squad. The Kasai often preached their pride mentally, but how could he do that if there was anyone who felt alone or untrustworthy here? He had to rectify this of course, but it would require some help from the Vermillion as well, and a bit of trust in the older man.
A smirk crossed the fire mage's lips. I mean truthfully, we're all broken in some way. That's why we became Magic Knights. We may still be broken, but this Order and especially this squad makes us feel like our broken pieces at least fit together somehow. Sliding forward in his chair, Ardere placed his elbows on the table and looked at the orange haired boy. I can personally guarantee that no one here distrusts you. If we didn't trust you, you wouldn't be here. You may feel broken now and it may take years to pick up the pieces, but you will get there eventually. As long as you have your will, us fellow lions will do the rest.
The brown and red haired mage knew how it felt to seem broken or damaged. He had felt that way for a long time after his father died and he left home, but in time he had come to learn he was not broken or damaged. The Crimson Lion squad had created a new home for him, and even more so made him appreciate the home he already had with his mother. It was a long road across the years, and war had not made it easy but he managed to feel whole. Ardere was so close to achieving a few of his long time goals, and honestly it felt surreal. But Silas would not be alone. He too would accomplish whatever goals he had set for himself, he just had to believe. Just have a little faith in yourself and in us. In time I'll show you why we're the number one squad. Don't worry. Perhaps if you and I go on a mission, we could kick some ass together. Aaaand maybe I could teach you a thing or two. It is my job after all. Honestly he had kind of been slacking on training new recruits. He had been so focused on becoming an Archmage to take over for Lysander, that he had lost track of what his true duty was; the Lions. Now he would not forget that, he could not.
It would take a few moments for the vice captain to speak again. The young lion would understand why as it was a lot to deal with on top of the personal question Silas had asked. The young Vermilion was unsure if the answer he gave Ardere was the one he was looking for but the lava mage knew it was better to say what he truly believed rather than what someone wanted to hear. Ardere would then speak telling Silas that everyone in the magic knights were broken in some way. The older man would then go on to explain that the order and especially the crimson lions helped feel like all the broken pieces fit together. Silas knew that what the vice captain said was true as the squad helped him feel less broken after what happened. He would also say that he can guarantee that no one in the squad distrusted the young lion or he wouldn't be here.
He would also tell Silas that as long as he had will that even if it took years he would be able to pick up the broken pieces and that the squad would help him. Silas was glad that Ardere didn't look down at him for feeling this way a he was perhaps the first person Silas had told about how he felt inside. The vice captain would then finish by telling Silas that if he had faith in himself he would show the young lion why they were the number one squad. He would then offer to go on a mission together so they could kick some ass and maybe Silas would be able to learn a thing or two. This was the perfect chance for Silas as he would not only get to see Ard fight but he would be able to learn from the older mage. The young vermilion would take a deep breath before speaking."Thank you for the answer and it would be great to kick some ass with you. I will also become someone you can be proud of not just as a vice captain but as a fellow mage knight this i promise you."After speaking Silas would smile at the vice captain as the young lion had manged to regain some confidence back.
Ardere stood up and stretched his arms and legs, a continuous groaning sound emitting from his throat. Wiggling around a bit, the fire mage managed to work out the kinks in his muscles. He had been sitting for far too long after awakening. Now was the time to get up and begin the day, albeit the day had begun for most normal people quite some time ago. The Vice Captain had managed to finish his reports. Fortunately the Crimson Lions did not require much paperwork when it came to most of their members, however there were the rambunctious few that had a bad tendency to go overboard. The Kasai had been one of these rambunctious few back in the day, hell he still couldn't help but blow up a few buildings. Was that setting a bad example? Hmm. He thought to himself.
Well I do have to say, I enjoyed our conversation Silas. I really do hope things go well for you. I look forward to working with you a bit more. You might not quite be on my level yet, but I think you've gotten far enough to have some fun in the big leagues. Looking outside the window, several squadrons of Crimson Lion members were running their daily drills while others practiced magical control or power usage. Ardere was proud of them, but there was a danger looming in the distance. His confidence had been restored since his fight against Lawrence and his completion of Kashgar's Keep by himself, but that hooded woman he saw before. That mana signature. It still bothered him. The war has tipped into our favor for the time being, but that won't last forever. The final battle is getting closer. This is one fight that I can't be excited for. Just do me a favor Silas and watch out for the other young lions. I was sheltered compared to the rest of you. By the time war began I was already a man. The younger ones that are being forged in war--I do not envy them. Letting a sigh escape his lips, he turned to the Vermillion with a slight smile. But we're not backing down any time soon, right? We've got to finish this one way or the other. Might as well make it a hell of a fight. He wished he could say he knew for sure that they would win the war, but it was perhaps the one thing he was unsure of in this world. But the thing he was most sure of, was that the Diamond kingdom would never properly recover regardless of the outcome of this war. The final battle would be a time for the Clover mages to truly show their stuff. He only could hope that he trained his lions to the best of his ability.
Silas watched as the vice captain got up and started to stretch his arms and legs. It seemed as if there talk was coming to a close to an end a Ard looked as if he was about to start his day. It was around mid day but i guess it's never to late to start the day the young lion would think to himself. Vice Captain Kasai would start to look out the window and Silas' eyes would follow seeing fellow newer crimson lion's training. Adere would then start to speak about how Silas wasn't quite on his level but he would be able to have fun in the big leagues. This made Silas what it was to be a part of the big leagues the young vermilion knew he would have to find out sooner rather than later if he planned on becoming Vice Captain. The talk would then shift to the war and how they had the edge for now. This was true as Silas had heard some of the reports about the royal knights fighting two of the shinning generals.
Based on what the young lava mage knew about diamond which was very little he knew they would strike back. He of course didn't know when but he knew for a fact that when it happened it would be bloody and a lot of people were going to die. Ard would then ask Silas to do him a favor and watch over the other younger lion's Silas knew he would have to do this after all how could he expect them to follow him into battle if he wasn't willing to die for them? Ard would then go on to explain that he was sheltered compared to Silas and the younger mages. The same could be said about the young vermilion as he was stuck at home during most of the war. Silas of course had a scar but that wasn't from fighting in the war the young mage was just unlucky enough to run into a spy. The vice captain would continue to talk about how they didn't plan on giving up anytime soon.
Silas would smile at this statement because it was true. The crimson lion kings were not the type of squad to give up just because things might look grim and Silas wasn't going to be the first. The young vermilion would have a fiery look in hi eyes as he spoke."Your right i don't plan on giving up anytime soon giving up isn't my style. As for protecting the newer members I will defend with with my life that goes for anyone even you." As Silas was speaking he would notice one of the newer members having a hard time with is magic. Mayhap i should go help him after this talk."As much as i enjoy talking to you we are both busy people so i must go as i have something i need to do."Silas would give the vice captain a salute before walking out to help the mage he saw out of the window.
