Eloi wandered through the forest quietly, his wooden backpack clattering a little as he walked. Another day of searching for magical creatures to observe and study with no real success. Searching for such creatures was never an easy task and most days were like this, wandering the woods with nothing to immediately show for it. Finding habitats usually took a few months at least. This was an ideal time to find what Eloi was looking for. The elusive Snow Wasset. They hibernating for a good majority of the year, and winter was the only time they were active, hunting down anything they could eat only to fall back underground.
The young researcher finally found out why as he saw a number of people gathered around the guardian tree, a massive tree in the forest, along with vendors handing out some sort of trinkets. The Wasset would avoid coming up here with this many humans around. Eloi walked to one of the vendors. "Excuse me," Eloi began. "What's going on here?"
"Ah, a traveler eh?" The vendor replied to his question with another question, to which Eloi nodded. "This here's a celebration of Yule. Everyone's decorating the guardian tree and other trees in the forest. Used to be for safe passage in the winter but now its just a fun little festival eh. Here, a decoration on the house from me." The vendor politely handed Eloi a small, white, fuzzy little charm to put on the tree. It actually looked like the creature Eloi was looking for, albeit the size of a finger. Eloi nodded back at the vendor. "Thank you," Eloi replied, giving the vendor a small token of money anyway as a sign of appreciation. A tip if you will. There were a bunch of people at the tree right this moment though so Eloi decided to take a seat under one of the trees and watch the dancers dance. The Wasset wasn't going to come out with all this commotion going on so he might as well rest for the night and enjoy the festivities.

Trudging along, the loud crunch of snow could be heard at odd intervals. This snow was deep here in the forest, or, at least this off beaten path. Why did he have to take this path? Oh, right, because he wanted to see if he could find anything worthwhile related to this unique mana beast he had heard rumors about. Elias Weltenbauer was a keen mind and a leading researcher on the study of mana beasts, much like this supposed what's it, or, was it, no, a wasset. Now, he had published information about the studyies he had performed before, something that earned him some noteworthiness in the kingdom. But, he wanted to study them further, pbulish more volumes about different archetypes of mana beasts.
That would have to take some time, and, compiling a lot of notes, with an addendum here and there to whatever volumes are out when they get out. In the back of his mind, his co-writer, and other half of his cursed soul, Elie, sat, in a lounge chair, reading over a book with a bored expression on her face as Elias complained about the depth of the snow here. His feet sinking a foot or more down in to it, just for him to flail forward, and lift his leg out of whatever hole he had just made, only to sink it back down in to a patch of snow to make a fresh hole.
He had become curious about these rumors of unique beasts, if they were one of a kind, if they came back in to the world if slain, he just, he had to know. But, he hoped that, based on the readings that Elie was getting of a gathering of human mana signatures in the distance, that this wasset wasn't going to show.
As he approached this large gathering of mana, the snow lightened up a bit and he could go from trudging along at a snail's pace to walking like a normal human in snow, in to a jaunty jog through it, a quick little crunch crunch crunch ringing out as he cleared his way through the snow bank and took the time to brush his clothes off while he generated a small amount of black ink above his palm. It swirled around in a circle before the color changed to a bright blend of orange, yellow and red, and took on the property of flames, which he brushed in the air near his wet pants, drying them quickly. His paint magic oddity was the best. He thought to himself as he walked further through the snow.
When he finally came to the area with the guardian tree, he picked up on the presence of another person, thanks to Elie, who had a strong magic signature, something above the standard commoner. It was always nice to talk to people like that. It was a matter of finding them, blending in with the festivities in the mean time, while keeping an eye out for any odd mana signatures, the black bull going on unseen guard duty without his cloak on today.
Alfred walked along the snowy forest. His breath easily seen in the cold, snowy, and wooded surroundings as the forest was decorated with lights and ornaments. He would come here every year as a child and it was one of his more happier memories as more commoners came to this event so he wasn't given death glares from many people. This year, however, he decided to head to the event alone feeling nostalgic. He smiled seeing the lights hung on the tree, seeing them was giving him a bit of warmth in his heart which helped with the bitter cold of this time of the year.
He wore his normal suit and tie as usual but had his eclipse cloak which kept him a little warm and protected from some of the snow being carried by the wind. He saw children playing and laughing with each other as they were doing usual stuff like throwing snowballs, making snow angles, and snow man. He sighed as this was one of the few times where when he was a kid he could actually play like a normal little boy. He watched them play and saw their parents watching them to. This made him wish he was a kid again so he could enjoy some fun games but it was still nice to be around all these people and not get the usual death glares from everyone around.
he leaned against the tree and heard a kid yell "Watch out mister!" he looked up and saw a snow ball hit some branches of a tree he was leaning against and saw the snow starting to come down from the branch and falling on him covering him in a good amount of snow as he shivered now being wet and covered in snow on this cold day but he tried to stay happy as this place had some good memories for him.

Eloi glanced over as a tall, well dressed, man walked over to the same tree he was sitting under and leaned against the tree to relax. Isn't he cold? Eloi thought but chose not to bring it up. The man chose what to wear himself and Eloi had no reason to care that he was wearing a suit in the middle of the woods in the middle of winter, while it was snowing. Eloi looked back over to the festivities though and heard a kid shout and looked over to see a hearty mound of snow miss him yet fall entirely on his neighbors head. The man also had quite the magic presence about him that Eloi could sense.
Eloi had a deviant smirk on his face after the initial surprise of watching what just happened and let out a mischievous sneer next to the man as he looked over at the shivering gentleman. "You alright sir?" Eloi asked politely through his deviant look that belied his concern and confirmed the humor he found in the man's misfortune.
This was nothing more than a pause for Eloi though as he kept his head facing the crowd, looking over and seeing all the people enjoying themselves. Eloi also kept an eye on some of the younger kids, which probably looked a little creepy to anyone who noticed, but still more necessary than anyone probably understood. The Wasset he was searching for were carnivorous and small children were about the size of the prey they usually target, perhaps a touch smaller. While the researcher sincerely doubted a Wasset would come up in a crowd this big if one wandered off alone to far, that would be an entirely different story. "Hm?" Eloi's gaze glanced over as he sensed another magical power lurking around in the crowd. Perhaps there was less to worry about than Eloi thought.

First one, then another. Two rather powerful magic signatures. Or, at least standing out in a crowd of nobodies. Elias just took in a deep breath through his nose, leaning back while closing his eyes. As he leaned forward to exhale through his mouth, he opened those demonic looking red eyes of his, overshadowed face thanks to that hood of his. An eager and manic grin across his face as he trudged through the snow to help with the decorating of the tree, until kids shouting drew his attention, glancing over to see a pile of snow falling through tree branches. That domino effect of a little bit tumbling and causing more weight to be pressed where it shouldn't, which just lead to more and more snow falling, the branches giving way under the weight of the fresh snow, and dumped it all on top of one person.
The person just so happened to be one of the two that he was sensing, Ellie was busy calculating their exact locations in his mind, mapping it out for him, while explaining, They're both basically on top of each other. Several times, only for Elias to respond to her So zoom in? Which just got him a berating, that they were already zoomed in as much as possible. So, he would start to meander his way through the crowds, readying a bit of ink in the palm of his hand. It wasn't a threatening display of magic, rather, he was doing something out of the kindness of his heart, and the desire to just, you know, pry in to peoples' lives.
As he approached, Alfred would have just been getting out of the snow, "I don't what it is with this time of year, but here. Dry off with this." He held out his hand, offering a cupped hand of ink, black ink. How would that dry anyone off? Well, it bubbled before flaring up. The black changing to a slurry of red, orange and yellow, and it took on the appearance of flames. It would actually have a little heat behind it, enough to let Alfred start to dry off.
"So, what brings you two all of the way out here?"
On the outskirts of the forest was Scarlet who was skipping through trees, filled with the merriment of the season and she was oblivious to the other's occupying the forest. Children danced around the trees as she skipped past them gleefully regarding them with kindness she wasn't even sure she possessed. Light on her feet Scarlet cartwheeled around in the snow until dizziness' symptoms set in and she fell over in a uncoordinated and exhausted mess amidst the snow. Lazily swaying her arms and legs she began to laugh high-spiritedly as an angelic caricature was slowly forming; the result of cold bitten hands which were tactlessly exposed to the weather, and a determination out-rivaling that of just about anyone. Sitting up, Scarlet ventured her sight towards what appeared to be a gathering of people whose power levels were well over nine thousand. Limber and lithe she sprung to her feet and began to spin towards them with her palms out stretch so as to slow the rotations. When she was within meters of them she simply sat down and inclined her head while pantomiming with a gesture of a cupped hand to her ear. Abruptly ceasing her jest she stood without using her hands and then swept her left hand from across her right shoulder, tilted her head and then inclined at the waist.
Alfred was covered in the snow in snow as he looked at Eloi who asked him if he was okay. He was shivering due to his clothes being soaked from the snow "P-perfect" he said shivering as he heard Elias came up offering an ink. He looked confused until he saw the ink bubbling then turning into what seemed a fire. Alfred used it to warm himself up "I came here because of nostalgia. I use to come here all the time with my parents when I was a kid" he said as he continued to talk to them. Alfred was done drying "I thank you and now i bid you all a adieu" he said walking as he began walking away.
The festivities that were going on this year were all kind of new to him. He wanted to experience them all because the ones that he did at the mountains were nothing like these. The experience was amazing, and he couldn’t help but explore through them all. This one, in particular, took an interesting feeling. There was so much joy to this, and it could only fill his heart with happiness through all the sadness he felt today. He wished that he could have been spending this day with his family, but more or so the cousin that disappeared on him. That cousin was the closest he was too, which was he lingered in his mind and his heart. Still, today was a day to enjoy and he figured that he would put that aside for just one day. ”He would have wanted that right? I’m sure he would have wanted that, so I’m going to do my best and enjoy this.” He thought to himself.
The snow fell from the sky as they hit the tree top, which continued to fall down onto the other leaves, and branches. It was a chain reaction, which brought some snow to fall to the ground. Yuurei, in particular, was walking through the snow. He would do so as he would leave a trail of footprints behind him. He enjoyed this cold and he was used to it because of the mountains that he lived in. The higher you were the colder things got and he learned that with being where he was now. The young man could only wonder how cold it was at his home. Thinking about his family, his mind would become distracted due to the noises of the children laughing. His face shifted toward them, his body would stop moving as he would watch them run around. This brought him to smile as he could see how freely they were; he replaced those kids with him and his relatives when they were younger.
Of course, thinking of those memories were interrupted by another again. He looked over to someone who looked like they were talking to.
”Hey…hey…hey you, how about you buy some decorations here and go place them on the Guardian Tree? It’s what you do here bud. So, how about it?” The man asked Yuurei.
The noble looked at him and looked at a specific tree. This one tree was a magnificent sight to behold. He could only see the decorations that were already placed on this tree. It was nice to see that there were people who did this, and he figured he would experience it for the first time. He had moved over to the vendor and started looking around to see what he had. The man had a massive amount of things to be sold, but Yuurei was looking for one that could be related to him. His eyes would continue to scan the area, but soon enough he would find two things he wanted to purchase and place on the tree.
”I would like the snowflake, and I would like the crescent moon that you have there, please.” He said to the vendor.
The man would look around, and smile when he saw the two that were being purchased. He would grab them, and hand them over to Yuurei. The dark-haired man would look at them and smile with joy and excitement. He would hand over the gold that was needed to purchase the items.
”Thank you for the items, have a nice day.” He said to the man.
”Thank you for your purchase, and you enjoy the festival.” He said to Yuurei.
The young man would turn and walk away from the vendor and started making his way towards the Guardian Tree. There were a ton of people that were around this tree, and they seemed to have been with friends or their loved one. It made him feel a bit awkward now, but he figured this would happen. He would rub the back of his head as he would try and feel better. While he did this he would see a clearing appear near the tree. It was cue to walk forward, and he would do exactly that; a few people would give him stares, but that was because of his clothing. He wore expensive clothing even though to him they were always normal. When he got to Guardian Tree he placed both of his decorations on the tree and he could only smile to see that he had done this.
It brought warmth into his heart for some reason, but he didn’t know or understand why that had happened.
”Hey mister, there are more things to do here, how about you check the dancing the adults do on the other side of the tree. It’s fun.” A kid would address him as he felt like the old guy was alone and didn’t know what to do.
Yuurei would look over to the kid and he would smile at him because he was happy that someone was kind of enough to direct him on what to do around here. He knew that kids were so kind and truthful, which made them naïve, but that was a good thing for their youth.
”Thank you I will go see that right now. I’m sure it’s something that I would enjoy watching.” He said to the kid.
He was about to make his move but hesitated for a second.
”Would you like to take me there?” He asked the kid.
The kid would nod and run forward and ahead of Yuurei. He would turn to the man and motioned him to follow him. Yuurei would see that and he would follow the kid around the tree, and hopefully towards his next destination.
The venders were located around a general area, lights hanging between the stalls with numbers of people walking along together. Families spending the season with one another, children spotting their friends and running over to them to talk about what it was that they had been up to for the past few hours, as though those few hours were somehow the equivalent of weeks. Venders attempted to outdo one another, louder, better quality, cheaper prices, more sparkles, shinier.
Junan stood just outside of the area that was lit.
He was unsure on what he should be doing. It was his first time in the area, he'd only recently gained his grimoire and upon doing so he'd been encouraged to travel properly. He'd spent some time at home first, something wouldn't feel right if he'd not spent some time with his mother before he headed out on his own, and so he had done just that.
But here he was surrounded by the unfamiliar, and he felt it. He felt the way he was. Alone.
This time though it wasn't by his own choice. His right hand came up and grabbed his left arm. He wasn't sure what he should be doing. He knew what this place was, and he could see what everyone else was up to, but he didn't know if he should join in, or if he should simply turn around and walk away.
His eyes searched for something, anything that was familiar. Hopelessly.
Or so he thought.
It was then that he saw a boy with long navy hair, about his age but shorter and slighter. Junan's eyes fixed on the other boys form. Something about the way he moved, something about his actions. He was familiar.
Junan started to shadow the other boy. He didn't hide himself or anything, or even avoid being seen, but simply followed the other, his head trying to figure out where he knew him from, how he knew him. Did he actually know him?
A vendor called to the other, getting his attention. Junan couldn't work out what was said, but could see that the vendor had made his sale. A snowflake and a crescent moon. As the other walked away from the stall Junan followed. He was walking towards a tree that he'd looked at while in conversation with the vendor.
Ah, so that's the tree he's going to hang those on. But where have I seen him before...
He placed the decorations on the tree and admired his work. Junan noticed that others were looking at the other boy, hearing a couple of people make comment, telling their young ones to stop staring, he was a noble, they were looking at his clothes. Something Junan hadn't noticed, it was something he was used to being from the Krane family. Junan himself however didn't spend quite as much as the man ahead of him, and wore clothing which could be mistaken for either a noble or a wealthy commoner, so he didn't attract the same attention, people seemed more comfortable near him.
Though in saying that it was also clear that children here at the least didn't care. A young boy walking up to the other and in the end seemed to be pointing at some other location through the line of trees.
Something about this kid was familiar and he just couldn't put his finger on it. He'd see where they ended up.
The kid was leading Yuurei to where he wanted him to go. It wouldn’t take long for them to reach there, even though the tree that was in front of them was huge in comparison to the other ones. Still, he picked up his pace as the young kid was running around charging the way. He would smile because he remembered being of that age. He was such a free spirit and open-minded individual. When he got to the area where the kid was leading him to, he would come to a full stop. His eyes would widen as he was amazed at the scene he would arrive to. The people had set a campfire a few meters away from the tree, so there wasn’t any loose fire that could start a fire. They were dancing around in sync as they were moving around the campfire.
The light that emitted from the fire gave these dancers an aura around them. It was a thing of beauty to see, and a scene he couldn’t forget even if he wanted to. Their motions through their dancing were soothing and looked like there was a constant wave in water. The music that was also being played in that area went well with their dancing. It was soothing to hear and watch as he had heard the music when he was following the kid, and it was why he knew he was going the right way.
”You see mister, I told you it would be fun. They have been doing this the whole time and I want to be in next year.” He said to Yuurei as he was also fascinated by the scene.
Yuurei could only smile when he heard the kid say that. It was good to have dreams and he was happy that the people that he met stuck to them. He wanted to pat the kid on the head, but he wasn’t sure if that was the right thing to do. Instead, he kept his hand to himself as he didn’t want to get in trouble.
”Yeah this is beautiful and fun to watch. I’m happy that you brought me here kid. As for you being a part of this dance, I’m sure you will be in next year. When the time comes I will come and see you there.” He said as he smiled at the kid.
The kid would look at Yuurei with a smile on his face as he was encouraged with what the man had said to him. There were people looking at him alright, and he had taken noticed of that. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but he figured that it had to do with the fact that he was a noble. He had rubbed the back of his head as he was a bit embarrassed from the stare. He didn’t think anything of it until now, but it was awkward. On the other hand, whenever he looked in their direction they had shifted their heads to look the other way. This caused him to smile when he saw that, but there was a particular person that caught his eyes.
This one guy had a necklace around his neck, glasses on his forehead, and everything else was regular about him. He could tell from the jewelry and the glasses alone he was not a regular commoner, and the way he looked had brought a familiarity to the person. He was staring at him, which couldn’t be helped because he was trying to figure who he was. He placed his right index finger on his chin as he was tapping it trying to remember. This guy looked like a person he had seen recently. This would cause him to go into deep thought for a few seconds. That was when he stopped tapping his finger on his chin and brought his hand down to open palm as he figured it out.
”Thank you for bringing me here. I’m going to go talk to someone that I think know.” He said to the kid as he started walking towards the man with the white hair.
He didn’t think he was a member of his family as he had white hair, but noticed the black hair on the side and assumed that he might have dyed his hair. When Yuurei got a couple of meters from him, he would come to a stop as he didn’t want to seem hostile, or anything like that.
”I remember you. You were in the room the time that we were all given our Grimoires if I remember correctly. If that wasn’t you I’m truly sorry for getting you mixed up. But I don’t think I forget someone with that hair color in our family because we aren’t usually born with light hair.” He said with a smile on his face.
He was happy to see someone from the Krane Family out in the world like him. He thought he was the only person who thought about going into the world and learning and experiencing new things, but he was wrong on that. He would reach his hand out towards the guy as he wanted to shake his hand, but also introduce each other. He would have been one of his cousins, but not one that he hung around.
”My name is Yuurei S. Krane. What’s your name?” He asked keeping the smile on his face.

A young man approached Eloi and the dark haired stranger next to him and offered...ink? That was a strange offering to dry someone else off with. Nonetheless it proved to be effected as he watched the the ink turn red and radiate heat for the gentleman. The man gave a short answer before walking away with a goodbye. The applications of magic would never cease to amaze. Anything could be used for any purpose depending on who was using it.
Eloi quietly watched the man walk away before speaking, his head still turned in the direction the man wandered off too rather than the one he was speaking to. "I just happened to stumble upon this little gathering in my travels and decided to take a little break," Eloi answered as his eyes shifted towards the person he was speaking too. "I won't find what I'm looking for tonight anyways." Eloi senses still continued to pick up more people still, as he felt another magical presence, and then another one, and then shortly after another one still, but only filed the existence of the three powers in the back of his head. It wasn't the Wasset he was looking for because both presences were hanging above ground the whole time.
"What about yourself stranger?" Eloi returned the question back at the young man. "Are you here for the festivities or something else?" The young man seemed pretty normal himself at first glance but this fellows magical strength, and the precision he had used previously to assist the darker haired gentleman, were far more proficient than normal people were. Plus he had some dirt on his clothes though it looked like he got most of it off it was still there if you were paying attention. It was the look of someone who left the main path here and was around snooping like Eloi normally did. Eloi wasn't so much suspicious but curious, however his flat, observant stare from his one true eye probably gave off a more threatening look than intended.
The other boy walked off through the tree line and into the lights and music that were through it. Junan followed, not trying to hide, he didn't care if he was seen, in fact if he was then probably all the easier.
And that's exactly what happened.
The other boy was aware he was being watched by many around him. The commoners looking at his fancy clothing, whether out of spite, jealousy, or admiration, but Junan would have stood out as not looking at his clothing, but at his head and face. A different kind of looking, a watching, like someone trying to figure something out.
When the boy looked at him though it didn't seem to take too long for the other to recognise him.
It was also about that same moment that Junan realised who the boy was. They walked towards each other, both with a look of possible recognition on their faces.
The other boy was the first to speak, and confirmed to Junan where they'd seen each other. He nodded, his eyes moved up and his hand pulled down a small amount of his hair. Yeah. This would have made him stand out in that crowd. He smiled, amused that the thing he did to put some distance between his family and himself ended up being the identifier.
Not that he didn't like his family, just going through that rebellious phase.
Hey Yuurai, my name's Junan F. Krane. Yeah, I think I remember you in there as well. You were like me if I remember correctly. Got a pretty decent grim.
He nodded towards the dance they were near.
Since leaving the mountain I was wondering what kind of place I'd find out here. I had no idea it'd be like this. It's good to see the different people mingling, don't you think?
He looked to the other to see what his reaction would be. There were some amongst the nobles who seemed to hate the common people, Junan had spent much of his time with those people, and had learned that they weren't all that different... they just didn't have the money, and also, for whatever reason, didn't seem to have naturally strong affinities to magic.
Yuurei could see the smile, and with that smile, he knew that this was the same person. He wondered what he was planning on doing after these festivities were over, but held onto asking that for the time being. He heard about the grimoire part, and figured his grimoire was okay; he was just happy to have one and knew that he would put in the work to make himself stronger through his book. Still, it was good to know that this wasn’t a one-way street. It would be embarrassing if this guy didn’t remember him, yet he did. ”His name is Junan, and it seems he truly is part of our family with the middle name and all.” He thought to himself as he was wondering what he was going to say next.
The music was still playing in the background and he was enjoying the soothing noise. It mattered to him, but he was more focused on hearing what this guy had to say. He was taller than him, but Yuurei was sure that he had to be the same age as him. Yuurei hoped that he would grow because he would be upset to stay this short his whole entire life. Soon he would hear what he would say to him. He would turn to look over to the crowd of people dancing around the fire, which brought a smile to his face.
”Yeah, I’m glad I left the mountain as well. I wanted to see the kingdom for myself and experience the world for what it truly is. I have been helping people around for quite some time. There are a lot of kind people who just need help. I’ve done just that, but I’m happy to see someone from my family also taking a similar route as I am.” He said as he thought he was the only person who thought like that.
He was wrong and he would soon look up to the sky to see how easily the snow had been captured by the trees that were all around the forest. It was an amazing sight, but beautiful nonetheless. He would bring his attention back down and onto Junan.
”Still, I just started my adventure like you. I have just been training and taking any job that I know I can do for the clients that need help. I plan on doing a lot more before I decide to join any of the Magic Knight Squad. Is that the same for you?” He asked Junan this question as he continued watching the people dance again.
He was glad to see someone from his family here, and it made him happy even though he tried his best not to show it. He didn’t want to make it awkward between them right now, so he did his best to contain his excitement. He also noticed that the kid was still standing there and was watching the people dance the same dance that they had been doing since the beginning.
The sound of the music not too far away on one side of them, faint but merry, while to their other side the laughter of the young and the encouragement of the older. It was a nice spot to stand in, somewhere the pair could enjoy the environment, while also meeting someone else in a similar situation.
Junan didn't remember exactly what abilities the other man had, he'd just noticed the few grimoire's that were of a particular tier.
In many ways the thing Junan was most glad for was that the other was a man of integrity. He'd heard rumours of those among his family and of the other noble families that were less acceptable. He was glad to find another from his family, his own age, who to a certain degree shared his viewpoint.
The only thing he didn't overly like was that the other boy felt that commoners needed help. From Junan's experience there were things they couldn't sort out due to their position, and due to the way that the world seemed to force a level of dependence on them. But then Junan had lived the better part of the last few years away from his family and more around the commoners. Though he'd still been in the region, he had likely gained a certain level of understanding. They were resilient, and they would survive.
"Yeah, I'm not sure whether the Magic Knights will want me, but I do see that to make the biggest changes and to gain access to the best resources I need to get into one of them. I think I'll take my time and train before I attempt to join them though. Since gaining my Grimoire I've not unlocked any spells, so I definitely need to look at practising my magic more." He smiled.
He'd been doing his best purely by helping people physically, whether that was planting some crops, repairing a hole in the roof, even something as low as holding a ladder, it didn't matter to him. They were people just as much as he was, and so he treated them as such. He learnt that the hard way.
"Is there a particular band of Knight's you're hoping to get into?" He asked.
