Cain walked down a hallway laid with a thick red rug. The light in the hallway was rather bright due to the numerous windows that looked out onto a large courtyard like area. Pictures of various nobles covered the adjacent wall. He kept his eyes focus towards a red door that was near the end of the hallway. He placed his palm on the door and opened it up to a large conference room like atmosphere. All of the chairs surrounding the table were empty, ten in total. At the furthest chair from the door has a pile of folders neatly placed. Cain ran his hand on the table as he walked towards this chair, as he passed each chair they swiveled in place until he reached the final one. He pulled it out and took a seat. “Well, let’s see what I’m working with.” What laid before Cain was the file on each of the Magic Knights that had been selected as a Royal Knights. He had asked one of the people assigned with the aid of the newly formed group to pull these files for him. If he was about to face some of the most fiercest people in the Diamond army, he was going to make damn sure he knew was going to watch his back out there. Some of them he had past experience fighting against, namely the current Captain of this rag tag group; speaking of Nicodemus, Cain did not understand why the man was given that honorary role of Captain. He was rather bland and honestly not anywhere near the other actual Captains in terms of skills or even combat knowledge. At least that was his most basic of opinions on the matter. Still, he was the Captain but Cain was going to be the one pulling the strings if he had his way. At least that was the goal at the end of the day. Perhaps if Nico died during this event, it would leave Cain in charge of one of the most influential groups in Clover.
Just as his hand touched the stack before him a light knock on the door prompted him to shift his gaze upward. A small young girl had popped into the room. She could not be any older than seventeen. “Hello, Mr. Cain, would you like anything to eat or drink as you go over the paperwork?” “Yes, a hot oolong tea and perhaps a blueberry scone would be ideal.” The girl did a simple nod and disappeared from Cain’s sight closing the door with a soft touch to the point he did not even notice. He reached the top two files, both labeled with a reddish tint and bore the symbol for Diamond on them. These were the two Shining Generals that the Captains had been briefed on a few months ago. These were the two individuals that they were supposed to be going after in this mission. It was either these two people’s lives or their very own. Cain had not heard of any rumors or anything prior to seeing these reports, he knew very little on the individuals that were within them, minus those that he had gathered during his years at Azure Deer. He knew of Katrina, she was the bitch that was part of the reason that the war started. Her attack in the early start of the war was a bit of a stir. Luckily there were plenty of people there to take note on the whole situation. Surely she had change in the last four years but still it was a decent base to go off of.
He opened up Katrina’s folder and looked over her various information. While her backstory was spotty, it was somewhat a familiar song and dance for those in the Diamond Kingdom. She was a product of hate and war, no wonder she herself had grown up to become that very hate and war. It seems that she even killed her own allies during the siege and warded off both Sprider and ‘Suke, two of the Knights’ more promising individuals. It made him rather nervous that even the combined efforts of those two Knights, according to the reports, were unable to even land a significant blow on the woman. It seemed that the combination of her raw speed and endurance Thank goodness ‘Suke had been there, his healing magic within recent years had become one of the highest caliber, even him four years ago during the time of the incident was probably capable enough to halt some very serious possibilities. “How will we deal with you Sapphire General? We’ll have to place somebody fast enough to keep up with you and durable enough to withstand those attack of yours... But who could handle that sort of combination… When it came to speed he could only think of himself. Ardere, Nico, and Jett all showed average speed, nothing that excited him. Ardere did have that nice little boost there towards the end but Cain was already gaining enough momentum at that point that it was nothing he could not handle. He sat there tapping his foot reading over the list of known abilities of Katrina. Not only was she fast but durable too. An odd occurrence of both water magic and diamonds allowed her to have higher than average flexibility while maintaining heavy hitting attacks and ability to shrug off anything heading her way. What made him most wary was her ability to utterly command the battlefield. It seemed that skills like curses were easily shrugged off and she was able to not only attack but evade and attack all in a fluid motion. That alone was something very fearsome. She used this through a spell while Cain relayed on his own raw ability and potential. Perhaps the use of golems and illusions would be a good means to keep her from being able to move about like that; having more numbers surrounding here would give her few options to move around and reposition herself. The saying though that a cornered animal was the most fearsome was also in the back of his head.
He tapped his foot and thumb anxiously reading more and more on this report and feeling a knot form hard in his throat. This woman’s levels of power were crazy. It was like nothing he had ever seen in a single person. Granted he had never really saw a Captain in action. Every once in a blue moon Wren would let his mana try to intimidate Cain but for some reason he never took the Captain serious. In his eyes Wren’s silly little attempts were nothing more than a child wishing to have a conversation at the grown up’s table. It was all a joke. That man was a joke. Letting in the Diamond pull an invasion four years ago was on his shoulders. Some sort of espionage and information network he had. He could not stop two Shining Generals from entering two separate towns, one of which was the goddamn capital of the entire nation. It was honestly a miracle that the King did not force Nero to give him Wren’s head. The days were numbered for that frigid asshole. Cain was rising in power, at his current movement he’s already leapfrogged Willow in seniority in the Order of Magic Knights due to being appointed Vice Captain of the Royal Knights, an order that was under direct leadership of the royal family. In some aspects he had more authority than even Nero when it comes to his security clearance, though the Wizard King outranked him 10 to 1 in just about everything else. Still, if he could prove himself a capable leader during these missions and take out one of the generals, what was stopping him from pulling the carpet right out from under Wren’s feet?
His mind was playing tricks on him, side tracking him to the point that it would do him nor those apart of this whole operation any good. Thoughts of sitting at a Captain’s meeting bore him. He did not want to play into the hands of a government he did not agree with, nor did he want to be in charge of any snot nose brats. At least with these Royal Knights he was given at least somewhat capable members of society that were able to hold their own in combat. Even if they were not all gems, he would still make them shine underneath his own bright light. Just as he was finishing reading Katrina’s file and getting his mind refocused on the task he had set out for himself this morning the same light knock he heard before, once again filled the room. Lifting his head he saw the same young woman enter and quickly place the hot beverage and scone beside him on the dark oak table. She quickly added a small sugar bowl and a little pitcher of what he suspected was creamer. It was a waste for her to bring such things. Oolong tea was a particular kind of tea that required no sugar whatsoever, at least for one who’s pallet was similar to Cain’s own. The oolong at the start was a bitter tea but once it graced one’s lips it turns the air itself into a sugary delight. He gave a half hearted smile to the woman and instantly reached for the tea but upon touching it discovered it was still too warm for him to enjoy. “Thank you, that should be all I require for awhile. You can come back in an hour or so to collect the dishes and perhaps refill my cup.” With that the woman exited the room and closed the door behind her, leaving Cain once again alone with the various files before him. He placed all of Katrina’s files into the folder with her name and the Diamond sigil on it and laid it to rest at arm’s length away down the table. Those that he felt most comfortable facing such a beast in combat would join her shortly, but before that he had to see what the other monster in the room was.
He grabbed the second red folder with the annoying Diamond sigil etched into it, wondering who’s damn job is it to make junk like this? He was partially annoyed by the fact that until a year or so ago he had been branded with a similar mark on his forehead. That horrid brand that showed his bleek and bloody past as nothing more than a lab rat for a colleague of these monsters in his hands. The first thing he noticed when grabbing the second of the Diamond General folders, was that this folder was much lighter than the last, already signalling to him that their reports were lacking details. This could make assembling a team for this Lawrence Knives much more tricky to handle than Katrina. He would need to be much more selective in his choices for this enemy. Clearly not himself, he would not place himself into a situation with too many unknown factors, it would be suicide in this scenario. At least with the Royal Knight exam he knew that there would be no long term damages done to him, at the end of the day it was all a game. These people, these Diamond Generals, they did not play games like that. At the end of the day they only cared for blood and carnage. Leaving wakes of destruction and chaos behind them. Whomever was marched to meet this man in combat was theoretically marching to their deaths. In all honesty, before Cain even opened the file he had already placed Nicodemus Silva as part of the cooperative. While the man was a capable fighter, in some people’s eyes at least, he was a noble and next in line for the Silva’ title. What a blow that would be, two potential heads of the family snuffed out within a year. He’d already been meddling in the Krane’s business but the Silva’s were another matter.
Still, Nico’s balance style would probably also be wise to send him into combat with against a man they had so little information on. Cain was purely speculating all this within the matter of a moment, as he had not even opened the folder yet. He took a deep sigh and flipped open the red folder, spilling out the contents inside. He was right, the file was rather bare compared to Katrina’s. There were some rough sketches of the man known as Lawrence Knives. He was intense even in sketch format and from the measurements given he was not only tall but also built for physical combat. His age indicated that he was no greenhorn when it came to combat. He’s likely been around to see various enemies of different calibur throughout the years. It would be wise to par a team that was equally as experienced in fights, though among the Royal Knights few were even in their twenties, let alone old enough to have experienced any sort of war like setting other than the one they were currently undergoing. It would be a real eye opener for all of them that would be involved. If they were all able to make it out alive, it would be an experience that would serve them well in the future.
So, you’re going to be the bigger of the two threats we face in the coming weeks, eh Mr. Nives?” He quickly flourished a pen from his pocket, spinning it along the top of his hand in a manner that was both skillful and studious. As the spin swiveled around his hand, Cain peered at the pages waiting for the words to arrange themselves in a manner that would give him some sort of magnificent insight on the situation at hand. Perhaps the key to defeating the whole Diamond army would be the quick and shocking death of these two. They did hold the key Fringe Region. Taking out those two would not only place a great deal of wind in Clover’s sails but it would also damper Diamond’s own rapid growth. Perhaps the juiciest of the fruits that would be a prize from killing them would be the fact that the other Generals would each have to come out of the woodwork. So far most of them, like their very own Captains, had been left behind in Diamond maintaining order on the homefront. It did not do the country much good if there was a rebellion of civilians going on. Like Clover, they relied on the younger generations to enlist into the military in order to keep this war of there's going. If that major resource somehow dried up the war would be over. Everything about this whole situation had to be examined and judged. Each thing, even the simple farm boys of the Forsaken Region, would have a value of some sort. It was all about how to keep your valuables safe while hurting or eliminating the other players. So far, Clover had been on the latter side of things. With a missing Captains, towns pillaged, and key trade routes to allies cut off or suspended, the country was soon going to be facing a crisis of sorts. There Eastern border was still safe thanks to peace pact they have with Heart, but that was only as long as Clover could be seen as a valuable ally. If the country was brimming with refugees, lack of trade, and a lack of food, why would a country with its own issues like heart want to keep itself latched to them?
The whole point today was to assess Diamond’s generals’ value and power compared to their own. Who could they levy to take away one of these gems that Diamond held? The pen swiveled around his hand’s top once more before in a fluid motion he brought it down onto the papers before him writing several notes, more like bullet points about the man before him.
Known to use explosions and fire
High collateral potential, DO NOT ENGAGE IN POPULATED AREAS
Brash and impatient
Proceed with highest caution
Minus the man’s more negative remarks in his file, he sounded rather similar to two knights within the Crimson Lion that came to Cain’s mind, Lysander and Ardere Kasai. While Ardere was a brash and impatient man, he was strong. Cain barely was able to come out of their battle with little more than superficial burns thanks to his golems and natural elusiveness. He might be the best bet against Lawrence. You know what they say, fight fire with fire. Ardere’s file was buried somewhere in the pile of folders that were on the desk, he would get a more accurate picture of the man within there. Cain already had a pretty good idea on Ardere’s prowess in battle but still, it was always nice to have all the information possible in these sorts of situations. He did not want to overlook a single potential risk. As much as he was self-centered, Cain did not want to see his fellow Knights slayed pointlessly. Not again. He already made that mistake once during this war. They were not his friends but they were placing their trust and their lives in his hands.
Finishing up Lawrence’s file, Cain once again assessed the temperature of his tea. It had cooled down enough for him to enjoy it without burning his tongue. Carefully he lifted the full cup and took a sip from the fine porcelain cup. The warmth and bitterness of the tea filled his mouth, running down his throat soothing it, before finding its home in his belly. He let out a gasp of awe at how wonderful it tasted. “Guess they’re able to afford much higher quality of oolong here in the Capital than what I’m used to in Nairn…Pity this relocation is only temporary.” He had been given quarters within a structure near the very building he was working in today. The building he had been living in for the past week was a building dedicated to nobles and other statesmen that visit the Capitol and were not with enough favor from the Royal Family to be graced a room in one of their hundreds of empty rooms throughout that goliath of a structure. The building he was placed in was fine enough though. His room was more of a suite than anything. It held a small sitting area that he could fit three or four others comfortably and a sleeping area separate. He could probably have stayed there and done this research but these files were rather classified and he did not have the service for refreshments like he does here if he was there. He’d be forced to make his own tea and would have to go out onto the streets in order to find a pastry to satisfy his hunger. With Lawrence’s folder resting on the table next to Katrina’s there were now just sleek black folders left with the emblems of the various squads that each of the Royal Knights hailed from. Cain tore off a bit of his blueberry scone and stuffed it into his mouth while staring at the black folders debating which of the lot he would inspect first. Within the stack there were three he somewhat was minorly familiar with, Jett King, Nicodemus Silva, and Ardere Kasai. He knew general prowess of each of these men but there was sure to be things he was not fully aware, such as personal history, behavior on missions, and all their known abilities. Then there was his very own file. What did the order know about him? He could already speculate a great deal but there was probably things that he wished was not known that was in there. This being a mere copy and probably not even a completed version of his full report from the order, he would have to gauge their intel on what little he could find in there.
He swallowed the pastry down with the a gulp of tea, nearly diminishing half of the remaining amount in the cup. “Well now I know who we are going up against, I guess it is time to find out who will be joining me on this suicide mission…” The first on the pile on black folders was that of an emblem laced with silver and formed into the shape of an eagle. “Is this planned, fate, or just a mere coincidence?” He picked up the folder and felt the weight of it all. Surely a chunk of the information inside would be redacted, he was born from the cloth of nobility after all. Special rights ands such would be given to him where among a mere commoner they’d be quickly discarded. Cain was particularly interested in reading Nico’s, Ardere’s, Charisu’s, and Magnus’ files as all four of them were directly related to noble houses throughout the kingdom; two of which, Nico and Magnus, hailing from the highest honor holding houses Silva and Vermillion respectively. Magnus was of lower rank within the order but still, he had some special rights given to him. Ardere and Charisu were both from smaller noble houses, so their files would be a bit more insightful with their faults. Nico’s was surely painted for a light that was befitting a noble.
Cain opened the folder and saw the basic information of the man that he had crossed paths with during the exam. Some of the information on the first page was things he was already well aware of, like the man’s relationship with the missing captain of the Silver Eagles, his combat abilities, and his grimoire’s element. Due to these very basic and dull facts, Cain was able to quickly skim through this page, he was not in the business of wasting his time with facts he already knew. What he was here for was to discover things that he did not know. While he would gladly like to march the man to his death at the hands of one of these generals, if Cain could use him to keep his own life in tact, then he’d do so without batting an eye. This fight between the lot of them and the generals was just a stepping stone in his path and ambitions. The slaying of Lawrence and Katrina would force Alexandria to show herself and also give Cain more credibility within the order to gain more files like the ones before him. Ideally he would eventually be granted full access to all knight’s and nobles’ files one day. It would be in that position of knowledge that his power would solidify. It would be there that he could start to chip away at this idiotic government that had been holding Clover together about as tightly as a belt holds an obese man’s pants together.
Flipping over a few pages, Cain finally found the main set of information he was looking for about Sir. Nicodemus Silva, his known combat abilities and history in combat. As one would expect from a Vice Captain and the current commander of the Royal Knights, Nicodemus was heavily decorated in the Magic Knight order, serving on the front lines for various combat operations throughout and prior to the war. It was here that he discovered a sketch of a young female as well as some general information about her possible identity. It seemed that young Nicodemus was once a man filled with love and not the old stick in the mud that Cain had at first thought of him as. Perhaps this was something that he should commit to memory. What happened to her though? Minus her face and a few sentences regarding her ties with the man. What he was more interested was the fact that Nicodemus Silva was a half breed. His mother was not of Clover national birth nor was she a noble. A finding most intriguing. He knew that the Silva’s cared little for those beneath them on the social scale. The second son of the head of the family marrying and conceiving a child with a foreigner was rather shocking to discover. Perhaps there was hope for the silver haired asshole after all. It seemed that Nico was not just appointed the position of the Royal Knights Captain and the Vice Captain of Silver Eagle for shits and giggles. Cain had witnessed the man’s versatility first hand during the trials. His ability to not only heal, defend, and attack would be a key asset in any sort of major fight. Really the ability that Cain saw the most value from the man was the healing aspect. He was able to dispel Cain’s own hexes, which not to brag he knew were rather potent. It would be a critical skill for those he fights beside. Judging on how much of a question mark Lawrence’s skill set was but the known destructive power would mean that having somebody able to tend to wounds and keep those that are fighting with him alive might be needed. Cain took another sip from the tea staring at the charts and bullet points of his various skill sets.
Nicodemus would be key to this venture. His overall skill set was balanced but still strong. He was not the strongest in direct combat though, that made Cain wary to rely on the man for any sort of front line sort of combat. Though the next file on the stack would surely make up for the man’s lack of raw offensive power. A red lion was marked on the second of the black folders, judging by the thickness of the file itself he knew it was not the aforementioned Magnus Vermillion but the rowdy Vice Captain of Crimson Lion, Ardere Kasai. The pair seemed to work out well during the exam, though little teamwork was shown. Nicodemus was able to keep up with the reckless actions of Ardere while being able to ward off a great deal of Cain’s own assaults. Perhaps the moderate durability of the man plus the overall utility he brought to the mix might make him the best pair to Ardere in this case. The only other two people Cain could see working out well with Ardere’s attack style was himself and Jett. But, he and Jett balanced each other out pretty well, Cain and Ardere were the groups two heavy hitters with Jett and Nico being more of their shields. Granted, Jett’s defense skills were in another league to Nicodemus. Where Nicodemus brought utility to Ardere’s direct power; Cain’s lack of direct power but high utility would supplement Jett pretty well. Unless the other members of this group threw a curveball, Cain was starting to see the bases for each of the teams.
