Today was the day. Emily couldn't just keep going through the basic motions for much longer. If she didn't take the opportunity she had now to actually put a spell into practice then there's no way she'd be able to get better. It wasn't too many minutes ago that the girl's first spell etched itself into her Grimoire. Her development of a first spell was a little slow according to some of her superiors so she never had her grimoire with her visibly. However, even now with just a single spell, she could carry it around freely and finally felt like she could start doing the name Vermillion proud.
Emily's grimoire began to flare with white smoky energy as it suspended itself in the air right around the girl's torso area. The inhaled a huge breath and got ready to cast her spell.
"Everything I've trained for in the last 9 years had led me to this moment right here. The Vermillion family was kind enough to take me away from that church because they saw my value. If I can't do this here then all of that will have been for nothing. Marco and Mavis, I won't let you guys down." she thought to herself.
Emily was always concerned about the two of them ever since they went missing on a mission one day when she was 15. They've been gone for a little over a year and at this point she just hoped that they're still alright. The two of them had been her teachers for as long as she could remember. They were with her for everything, whether it be the ups or the downs. Even back when she seemed super hopeless when it came to utilizing magic, despite being born as a noble.
The only reason Emily had been slacking off in her training and activity recently is because of their disappearance. However, as of a few weeks ago the girl decided to get back on her routine. Marco and Mavis would've chewed her out a million times already for skipping so much practice, not to mention the fact that she wasn't ever going to be able to go out there and look for them if she never got any better.
"Here goes..." she said to herself as she released the huge mass of air that she'd just breathed in.
"Smoke Creation Magic....!" Emily shouted, drawing her hand back to her side. Her grimoire pulsed with energy as a spiraling mass of energy surrounded the girl's pulled back arm. She focused on rotating the mana, faster and faster until the spell was ready to fire.
"Smoke Bullet!" she shouted, thrusting her palm forward and twisting her arm in the process. The rapidly spiraling smoke stream shot straight from her palm and slammed into a practice target. The target violently rotated before falling to the ground due to the strength and pressure of the attack.
Emily looked on with a smile, "I actually did it." the girl said as she tried to slow down her breathing a bit.
The girl was so excited to see that she was easily able to master her first spell. Was this what it was like to start using her magic again? She hadn't really taken much notice to it back then, but now she could see the difference. She knew that she always had a talented magical energy due to being born a Vermillion, however, she completely forgot about the boost in magic power that she received along with her grimoire. The result was nothing short of amazing in her eyes. A white aura of mana was pulsating around her, bending under the will of the wind just as smoke would. "So this is what it's like to use my magic again?" the girl asked herself as she examined her body and the mana flowing around around it. "I can't believe it. All this time I thought that my magic was inferior to Rem's, but in reality I just haven't been releasing my complete potential. At this point, this might even be enough to beat her and prove my position above her." the girl said to herself.
Emily raised both hands up in the air above her and began to focus mana in her hands. "There's gotta be some other kind of spell that I can learn with all this magic I have." she told herself as she looked up at the gathering mana. The girl slammed both of her hands straight onto the ground and released a burst of smoke that shot out in all directions. "Hmmm....was that it right there?" she thought to herself. It was certainly an effective way of getting distance, but the amount of pressure in the push back itself was lacking. There's no way she'd be able to actually push away any decent mage. Not any of her fellow lions, not any captains, and certainly not Rem. Emily did her best to think of an alternate way to create more pressure in her smoke blast. It needed to powerful enough to blow people away so she could get distance from them.
Just then, the girl's grimoire began to glow once more in the same magical power from before as it began wildly flipping through its empty pages. "Huh?" Emily asked, being snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of the magical book. All of a sudden, the grimoire stopped and another new spell began to appear on the page. Emily gave it a quick look and smiled, "This should easily solve all of my issues. Why didn't I think of that before?" she asked herself with a smirk.
The girl pulled back both her hands and gathered her mana together once again. "Smoke Creation Magic...!" she shouted as she prepared to unleash her attack. "White Burst!" she shouted, throwing both arms forward as a torrent of smoke shot from her hands. This definitely had to be enough pressure. The initial shock from the release of the attack almost knocked the girl off her feet, but she was able to tough it out.
Emily was able to keep the stream of smoke flowing with plenty of power and pressure, but one problem still remained. Earlier when she sent smoke in all directions she could cover her blind spots easier that way. However, with this funneled attack she got more of a flamethrower effect. It wasn't a bad thing, but she needed a way to cover those blind spots. Being a sensory mage, she could sense the people who may be in, and or attack from those blind spots, but that didn't really matter if she couldn't do anything about it.
She then came up with her next solution. The smoke mage began to turn her body while pouring out the smoke stream. Surprisingly, the shift in directions wasn't enough to throw her off at all so this would prove to be a good solution to her issue for the time being. Using her sensory skills, she could sense out where a person is and turn to face them in order to push them or their attack back. It seemed like a strategy that would work pretty effectively.
Emily stopped her spell and even reeled her mana back in, suppressing her aura a little as well. "That makes two spells that I can say that I've mastered. However, I need to find a way to utilize my sensory magic as well. It's already good for the obvious purposes, such as sensing people and magic, but I need it to be something more. Going into battle as I am now would leave me at a disadvantage only knowing attack magic. I need some other way of fighting, and if it isn't defensive then I'll need something more on the tricky side." she assessed. Emily was definitely intelligent when it came to fighting and magic in general. All her studies over those things as a kid really paid off now that she was older and has plenty of practice.
However, despite all of that knowledge, this one particular problem threw the girl for a bit of a loop. She was in no ways any good at defensive magic, and healing was out of the question as well. She needed to find a way to fight in battle that wouldn't leave her completely wide open all the time. She was a ranged fighter, and not very talented when it came to her physical abilities. However, her magical power was high and she had plenty of talent to her name so she was sure that she would find a way.
What would Marco have done at a time like this? Not like she could directly ask him so this was the next best thing. Emily then smiled a bit, "Well he would've probably shrugged at me and told me to go find Mavis." she said. "Well okay, then what would she have told me?" she continued. Marco and Mavis gave Emily so much help and information as she was growing up so it was kind of hard not being able to go directly to them anymore. She couldn't worry about that now though. This was something she had to figure out for herself. It would prove if she was truly ready to start advancing as a noble magic, and a magic knight, and most importantly, as a member of house Vermillion.
All of a sudden, that same magic happened once more. In response to Emily's thoughts her grimoire began to react. The magical tome cloaked itself in white energy once again and began flipping through its pages until it came to a stop on yet another blank page. Mana began writing the spell and the girl was reading as it came along. She had nothing to say about it except for the fact that it wasn't like anything that she'd seen before. "This doesn't seem to be like any traditional attack spell." she said to herself as she gave the spell another read just to make sure she didn't miss anything. Turns out however, she did.
"Illusion magic?" she asked in complete shock. Emily had never even heard anything about that type of magic before. Could this illusion magic have been a result of her natural sensory prowess? It was certainly a possibility, but that still didn't change the fact that Emily wanted to find out more. The girl closed up her grimoire and headed inside the Crimson Lions' base of operations. She went straight up to her quarters and pulled out an old book she used to read about sensory magic. "This has got to be it. I guess Mavis was here to help after all." Emily said to herself as she cracked open the book once again.
As a kid, Emily never finished this book as per request of her teacher, Mavis, simply because she had a natural talent for sensory magic as it was. However, by choosing not to finish the book Emily was completely lost of the topic of Illusion magic. Sure enough, after getting far enough back through the book there was an enormous amount of information on sensory magic illusions. "So this is how sensory mages fight in battle." she said after looking at a brief overview of the subject. With every new bit of information that Emily learned about this new type of magic the more she became intrigued with it.
"I understand now. So even higher level mages use this magic in ways that are destructive to their foes. These magical illusions are so real that they can even be deadly for their opponents. That right there is just insane by itself. The amount of power someone could possess using this kind of magic is unreal. I have to become strong enough to use illusion magic like that." she said to herself as she looked back into her grimoire at the spell.
"Smoke Illusion Magic...Foggy Night." she read. Now having a better understanding of Illusion magic, Emily could now properly assess the power of her new spell. She was overall impressed with what she was able to find out. Foggy Night was a spell that she could use to trick her opponents into believing that they can't see her as long as they are within the smoke that she creates using the spell. It was definitely powerful in its own way and could help the girl land an attack while the opponent is confused.
Emily put the Sensory magic book back on the shelf and decided that she was done training for the day. "I guess I should head back down and grab a drink or something. I think I deserve it for my work efforts today." she said to herself as she tucked her grimoire in her cloak and left her room.
